Would your dog like to try a Thundershirt?

We'd like five people to try one out and let us know if it helps calm their dogs. Did you watch the excellent Sky Atlantic biopic of Temple Grandin? The amazing autistic woman who has revolutionised animal welfare for cows in America by looking at the world through an animal's eyes? She found her own anxiety was dramatically reduced by a machine she made that gave the effect of hugging her - even though she couldn't bare to be hugged by humans.
Well whether or not you watched the show (buy the DVD if you missed it - really is fantastic - click here to Amazon link) if you've got an anxious or over-stimulated dog that could do with calming why not apply to take part in our trial of the item of clothing that has got people talking almost as much as Pippa Middleton's backside-enhancing dress!
Have a read of the background info from Xtra Dog below and if you're interested in taking part email liz@dogstodaymagazine.co.uk and put 'Thundershirt' in the subject. Tell us about your dog and why you think they'd benefit from a Thundershirt.

With its patent-pending design, Thundershirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs if they are anxious, fearful or over-excited.thundershirt image Based on surveys completed by over two thousand customers, over 80% of dogs show significant improvement in symptoms when using Thundershirt. Thundershirt is already helping tens of thousands of dogs around the world, and is recommended by thousands of veterinarians and dog trainers.
The Thundershirt is also in keeping with the Tellington TTouch ethos and recommended by Linda Tellington Jones, Sarah Fisher and Marie Miller. For more information on TTouch please visit our TTouch pages.
As for WHY Thundershirt’s gentle pressure works to calm a dog, experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. Using pressure to relieve anxiety has been a common practice for years. For example:
  • TTouch dog trainers use pressure to address a wide variety of anxieties.
  • Veterinarians use pressure to relax cattle when they are administering vaccinations.
  • People with autism use pressure to relieve their persistent anxiety.
  • Children with certain behavioral problems use pressure shirts and weighted vests to relax and focus.
  • Parents use swaddling to calm an inconsolable new born infant.
Until now, there just hasn’t been a well-designed, inexpensive pressure wrap commonly used for dog anxiety. Thundershirt is changing that! Thousands of veterinarians and dog trainers now recommend Thundershirts for their anxiety cases.

Interesting. But what happens when you take it off? Does the dog become stressed again or does the Thundershirt have a gradual effect in that the dog gets calmer and calmer and eventually no longer needs to wear it?
I use a soft muzzle on my dog at the vet's and that calms her down amazingly but she bounces back immediately it is taken off.
The Thundershirt must work in the same way but surely, in the long term, it would be better to look at what is causing a dog to become stressed?
