The 30 most deserving dog charities in Britain

Please also read http://coldwetnose.blogspot.com/2009/06/small-is-beautiful.html for guidance before posting a comment!

One of our wonderful readers has just contacted us for some help. She is looking to identify 30 of the most deserving dog-related charities as she has an elderly friend intending to leave approx £25k to each.
Her friend is keen to identify charities that are not going to use the money for PR or admin, she wants the money to make a real difference to dogs.
Quite a challenge!
We can think of quite a few, but 30 is a fabulous number.
Who would you recommend? What a great idea - making such a difference to so many.
I think the quest could make a great article.
Please let us know the charities you are familiar with for whom a £25k legacy could make a huge difference.

There has been a huge response and if we're not careful some of the tiniest charities may get lost as they don't have the numbers of supporters to campaign for them. Can I ask if your charity or point is already covered in comments please don't post again, we're not looking necessarily for the most popular charities - just trying to identify the ones who will make the best use of the dosh to help dogs.
The lady has confirmed that only registered charities would be eligible.
"The only criteria is that the recipients must use the money solely on the dogs, and that they are registered charities. I know that this is going to leave a lot of causes in the cold, but how else can I make sure that the money is used properly?"

I think it needs to be pointed out somewhere prominently that apparently this money is to go to Registered Charities ONLY.

Many rescues which have been nominated here are NOT registered charities i.e. Lurcher Link just to name one.

I'd like to nominate Southern Lurcher Rescue. I live in Canada where lurcher are far and few between, and while I didn't get my beloved pup from the rescue they have been an invaluable source of information and support. I love their facebook book page and reading about all the happy endings for the dogs who have found their 'forever homes'. I'm hoping to move back to England at some time in the future and when I do, I'll be going to them straight away to expand my pack!

I would like to nominate Rescue Remedies. Small group of volunteers who do a massive job for our Terrier Friends. No one gets paid and no one would want too either. All money goes directly to saving another 4 legged friend. Despite their financial pain, have now set up a Staffie Rescue which is another life line for so many Staffies and Staffie X's.

I think it's so sad that only registered charities are going to be considered. So so so many unregistered charities work so tirelessly and so hard and are so deserving of this money. What this lady is doing is wonderful. It really is. But to leave out the unregistered charities is very sad. It really is. Surely there is a way for her (with support of someone she trusts) to decide once all the 30 have been selected to ensure they are deserving of the legacy rather than just not considering them at all. PLEASE reconsider, so ALL the deserving charities get this wonderful opportunity :(
PLEASE.

I'd like to nominate G4U for some funding as they do such a wonderful job rescuing dogs that would otherwise be destroyed, or even worse, just because they no longer can run and win races. So many of them are so friendly and trusting and all they need is a good home where they can live out the rest of the lives in peace and tranquility. Funding will help to transport them from their original home to their new homes, or feed them whilst they are in foster care and even medical care to those who need it.

There are so many deserving help but please think seriously about a very small rescue org for a very large breed run by a dedicated person. Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare deal with the whole of the UK and really need help to keep going. They deal with every aspect of rescue & welfare.

The Doris Banham Sanctuary, reg Charity 1103372 saves thousands of dogs from pounds that may otherwise be put to sleep. Their volunteers work tirelessly to ensure thes dogs are saved and they are always in need of funds to pay for the kennel bills and the upkeep of the vans they need to transport these poor dogs in.

I think the choice to only include registered charities will be based around the accounts can easily be accessed online for each charity.
This lady would like the money to go to a rescue who dont spend out on PR, have very little admin costs and one where founders, trustee's and volunteers dont draw a wage from the organisation.
Without easy access to such information it would be hard to assess where the money was going. So I can totally understand the reasoning.

This is a very generous gift by someone who is truly special and I hope they have many more years with us because the world is a much better place for such kind generous souls.

Would like to mention Rochdale Dog rescue who do amazing work getting dogs from the pound when thier 7 days are up and get them to the safety of rescue. Most of the rescues mentioned here take dogs from RDR but sadly when a space cant be found the dog would be put to sleep, so RDR fund private boarding for them until a space is free for them. As they dont rehome often they dont get any money in at all apart from donations.

Freshfields animal rescue liverpool who have struggled after a kennel fire last year where they sadly lost one of their dogs. They help out so many dogs that many other centres would turn away. and never give up on the hope that there is a home out there for every dog.

I would also like to commend the work of Four Paws Animal Rescue. It is a small registered charity based in south wales who rehome dogs country wide.

Four Paws is a committed group of volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help the dogs that need their help. Be they on deaths row at the pound or a hand in when a family have had to make the heartbreaking decision to give up their much loved pet.

If there are no spaces available within the rescue our committed chair and founder will use her rescue contacts throughout the UK to help find a space in other rescues and thanks to the endless hours that she commits it's very rare that one of these lost souls passes to the bridge.

Four Paws has no rescue centre as such and is made up of a network of foster carers and rented kennel spaces when required.

I have been a volunteer for this rescue for over 2 years and it's been lovely being able to see the dogs that have found their homes and read their success stories in their new homes.

Many of our adoptees have become members of our forum which we use to promote the dogs looking for homes, run fundraising activities and just have a general natter...

This money would mean the world to the rescue and would also be a great reward and motivator to the committed team that help save the lives of many dogs and give them a much deserved new start in life.

I would nominate Last Chance Animal Rescue, Edenbridge, Kent. A fabulous organisation that rehome local animals - mainly dogs - and also run a weekly van to collect 'death row' dogs from a pound in Wales. They save countless beautiful, healthy dogs from suffering and death, and find them good homes. They are currently trying to set up a new centre in New Romney in Kent to double the number of animals saved, and a grant would really help them to achieve this.

what a wonderfull person, it certainly restores some faith in the human race,

if i may have my nomination go to SOUTHERN LURCHER RESCUE, based in essex, who tirelessly work so hard trying to raise funds to ensure that the lurchers who come into them have the best care and vet treatment whilst in foster homes is a very deserving charity,
they dont have kennels so rely on volunteers to foster in there homes and to asses the dogs temprement and to try and deal with any issues it may have as many of them have never lived in the home enviroment before.
I would like to nominate Pro dogs direct http://www.dogs-r-us.org/

they do fantastic work with rescued pup farm dogs and spend so much on treatment for these poor dogs.

Another vote for Wiccaweys from me.

Sarah and Paul have the hearts of giants and i couldn't think of a more deserving rescue.

They are so much to so many people - this money could help them in more ways than i could ever write.

Their work inspires and many people wish they had a heart even a quarter as big as theirs.

I would like to nominate EGLR Evesham Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue,
http://www.lurcher.org.uk/

Its been runing since 1989,They do not have kennels each dog is taken to foster care, those dogs that have come with too much baggage to rehome are kept in foster homes & sponsered in order to cover thier care,
Its a well known fact that some dogs take longer to home than others in 1 case they have a had 2 dogs looking for thier forever home for over two years & yet they still try.
In recent months broken legs, shoulders & pelvis's have cost the rescue a small fortune,

This is extremely generous of the lady to offer to support dog rescues in this way.

However, I find it somewhat disturbing that she is only including registered charities in this as they have traceable accounts. That somewhat implies that non profit making organisations do NOT keep a record of where any donated money is spent.

A professional organisation, regardless of whether they are a registered charity or not, do keep records. Not for profit organisations are just that - a group of people getting together to help their specific cause and are usually very grateful for any financial assistance they receive. As they have no outgoings on admin, keeping "official" accounts etc, then all money given to them is used SOLELY to help dogs.

I think this lady, however well meaning and generous she is being, should reconsider her stance of giving only to registered charities and consider ALL organisations who help dogs.

Every Charity deserves help - this is a wonderful gesture. I would like to nominate NEAPOLITAN WELFARE RESCUE. These are big dogs and when found they usually need expensive treatment. I rescued a wonderful Neapolitan - they so deserve a chance at living a healthy life. I KNOW this charity is in desperate need of funds which would go directly to save these wonderful dogs.
Drumble said…
Having thought about this further there is a way in which non profit making organisations could benefit. They could open a separate bank account purely for this money and each transaction from it could be documented. It is easier to see how the money is spent if it is separated rather than it going into a big pot.

It is a shame that many hard working dog rescues will not be eligable to be considered for this money purely because they are not a charity when indeed many of the smaller organisations would be unable to meet charitable status criteria.
Anonymous said…
I would like to nominate Hereford & Worcester Animal Rescue. They have the daunting job of being responsible for every stray dog within the County of Hereford. Without them all dogs would be euthanised after 7 days in the pound. They never turn a dog away & never refuse a dog vet treatment, however large the bill. When space is available they also help out other areas by taking in 'death-row' dogs. Not bad for a smallish rescue with just 12 kennels and some star foster homes.

As with most rescues, the work done at HWAR is tireless. Each dog is cared for & most of all loved wholeheartedly. There is no time limit for dogs in the kennels, they stay as long as it takes to find them a loving home & the rescue loves to stay in contact with the new owners & is always on hand to help. All monies donated go towards the dogs. Admin fees are negligible as the wonderful volunteers help out above & beyond.

To the person who is donating the money - Whichever rescues you choose, you are going to make a huge, huge difference to them & to the dogs they help. Thank you so much for your generosity. I can't put into words just what it will mean to the rescues who benefit.

Southern Lurcher Rescue, based in Harlow , Essex are a very deserving Charity. We got our two wonderful Lurchers from them. They do a wonderful job on very limited resources, a grant would make such a difference to the running of the rescue and to the dogs they look after. This is a rescue with a difference, no kennels, all dogs are cared for in the homes of volunteers - they spend such alot on vets bills - please help them out.

I would like to nominate Border Collie Trust G.B. www.bordercollietrustgb.org.uk who like all the rescues mentioned here (and others) do marvellous work. Over the last 12 years I'm told they have helped over 5,000 collies find new homes and now provide a wonderful rescue centre, back up support and vital help and guidance to hundreds of collie owners every year who need help - or just a shoulder to cry on. Having had two collies myself from them I know at first hand the care they offer to collies and owners.

hi, we wanted a rescue dog and looked around and contacted places but for us Four Paws Animal Rescue, Wales were the best. They are not just a re-homing service but a community, a family. They make everyone so welcome and have loads of experience in many differant areas so no matter what the problem, someone from the group can help. We now have our beloved family dog and still receive loads of support from the group. We have to mention in particular, Kirsty, who works tirelessly and endlessly for these dogs. Any hour any day she is there for no benefit for herself accept the well being of the dogs. All the team put in 100% and deserve every praise

What a wonderful legacy that is bound to make a huge difference to dogs all over the UK.

I would like to nominate Greyhound Rescue West of England (www.grwe.com). They have no paid employee's and rehome Sighthounds in a very responcible way by a dedicated group of people. Every dog in their care, regardless of injury or illness is fully teated by a vet and they will even support the dog in a home for the rest of it's life. A really worthy charity run by caring and dedicated individuals.

As an aside to this wonderful legacy, the lady should be reassured that if her will states that the money must be put to a specific use, then it has to be used solely for that purpose.

I would like to nominate Greyhound and Lurcher Welfare and Rescue (GLWR). GLWR was set up when Glastonbury race track closed three years ago. GLWR is a small but expanding rescue dedicated to rescuing sighthounds from a range of situations and backgrounds and mainly rehome in the South West of the UK although some hounds have been rehomed further afield. The founder's life is the rescue and he is assisted by a group of devoted volunteers. GLWR has been rehoming, on average, one dog per week but, with such a generous donation, could help so many more of these wonderful dogs find the homes they so richly deserve.

I am nominating the UK based charity GREEK ANIMAL RESCUE (RCN: 802243)

I started supporting GAR after visiting Greece in May 2008. I was so appalled at the sheer number of stray dogs and cats that I witnessed. They were literally everywhere and all of them were emaciated and in desperate need of veterinary attention. It broke my heart to see these loving animals begging for scraps of food and craving attention.

Strays in Greece stand little or no chance as they are so badly neglected and abused. Their lives are so often brought to a cruel end after being deliberately posioned and the 'stories' of torture, poisoning and killing of these poor animals occur daily.

Greek Animal Rescue have saved so many lives and this grant would ensure that so many more dogs could be rescued and be given the chance have the kind of life they so deserve.

I would like to nominate Barnsley and District Animal Welfare. www.badaw.co.uk
They are a small, registered, charity that is run by just four people. All the money they raise goes to helping the dogs with nothing going on 'administration costs'.

I would like to nominate www.littledogrescue.co.uk They are a fantastic bunch of people that give all of their time to this and also work with other rescues. They have transporters that will travel miles to save an animal, they are extremely dedicated. They struggle hard to raise money for their sponsored dogs and the forum members always band together coming up with new ideas for making money and many times it's auctions and they all chip in the extra money themselves. Their love of these animals is inspiring

I'd also like to nominate wwwhopedogrescue.co.uk. They are a new rescue started in the Blackpool area, which was sorely needed. Many of their rescues are saved from being put to sleep and are successfully re-homed. They are doing a fantastic job.

The only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.

A network of 16,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.

http://www.birminghamdogshome.org.uk/

Birmingham Dogs Home was founded in 1892 on land made available by the late Sir Alfred Gooch Bart, in New Canal Street, Birmingham. In 1987 we moved to New Bartholomew Street, with a grand opening by the Duchess of York. Since then this purpose-built building has provided shelter and protection for the stray dogs of the West Midlands. Able to house over 150 stray dogs in comfortable kennel blocks with adjacent facilities, the Birmingham Dogs Home has its own vets’ clinic, puppy unit and isolation unit.

We are a registered charity and for over 100 years it has been our mission to rescue, reunite and rehome stray, neglected and unwanted dogs from all over the West Midlands area. This vital work is only possible through the very generous support of the local community. This fantastic help has allowed us to improve our facilities and therefore our care for all these unfortunate dogs.

In 2000 we acquired a run-down site in Coven, Wolverhampton and set to work designing and building a state-of-the-art stray dogs’ home. When we opened in September 2002, the facility, named Sunnyside Kennels, had cost over £2 million.

Sunnyside houses 100 stray dogs in first class accommodation, with a veterinary consulting room and an isolation unit for those dogs requiring special one to one care. Exercise facilities are in the form of a beautiful grassed area that both dogs and customers can walk around at their leisure. We believe that this site is one of the best purpose-built homes in the UK.

I would like to put SHAK (Safe Homes And Kindness) forward. We are a registered charity up in Northumberland. We only take dogs from the council pounds throughout the country, that are going to be destroyed, and specialise in the bigger, more difficult to rehome dogs such as Rottweilers and German Shepherds. We do not take dogs from the public so we can use all our resources to help the dogs that really are in danger. For everyone of our dogs, our intervention really is a matter of life and death.

We have had a lot of dog with health problems including missing limbs, pancreatic problems, CDRM etc and everyone of them has been found a home to see out their days.

An influx of money like this would make such a difference to us. We are a completely voluntary charity, so every penny would go towards saving dogs lives and helping them find their way back into society.

Please look at www.shak.org.uk to see the kind of work we do.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I would like to nominate Greyhounds4U. Any organisation working to save greyhounds form cruelty and neglect which so often follows the conclusion of their racing career is worthy of support. Please consider GLWR, Greyhound Lurcher Welfare Rescue, who are based in Wiltshire. They are a really small charity but they work tirelessly to help these dogs that are so often dumped, abused and even killed when they are no longer able to race. I have been really impressed with the level of aftercare they provide with help and advice to make sure these dogs' 'forever homes' remain exactly that. They do not turn their backs on dogs with injuries and have helped nurse back to health dogs with broken legs that would otherwise be put down. Please help this small but vital charity to carry on the wonderful work that do.

I would like to echo the support for Lizzie's Barn Sanctuary. As has already been said, Fionna does an amazing job to help those dogs that other rescues turn away because they're not pretty enough, or the wrong breed, or too poorly.

I would like to nominate NEOPOLITAN MASTIFF WELFARE for the brillant work they do in rescuing Neopoiltan Mastiffs and rehoming them all over the UK, the sterling work they do is done by volunteers only, finding foster and forever homes for ill-treated, unwanted, neglected large breed Neopolitan Mastiffs. We are desperate to set up our own centre instead of using boarding kennels as safe houses. We have been offered some land so this money could litrally set up a new centre saving LOADS and LOADS of dogs.

Some excellent & hard working causes I might otherwise have nominated are already mentioned hence, as requested I wont repeat them, but one I haven't noticed is Tailends.

Whilst perhaps not, as far as I'm aware, big enough to be registered as a Charity this is an organisation well known in the dog community for taking in dogs who are elderly and / or terminally ill and may otherwise end their days in much sadder circumstances.

After a look at the website the donor may perhaps consider that registered or not this is indeed a cause worthy of at least a little of their support

There are some great rescue organisations out there. Northern English Springer Spaniel Rescue are a fantastic rescue organisation and registered charity run entirely by volunteers from their own homes. They rescue Springers Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels and other breeds of dogs. Last year they helped over 200 dogs. The take dogs from pounds as well as owners who can no longer cope. I particuarly admire the fact they neuter, vaccinate and microchip all their dogs. Can not recommend them enough I have a wonderful cocker spaniel and have fostered for them in the past when I had the time.

I would like to nominate Cheadle and District Animal Welfare (registered charity no. 1039350.) It is a small local charity that devotes it's time to rescuing and rehoming dogs and cats in the Staffordshire Moorlands/East Staffs area. They work in conjunction with a local boarding kennel (the owner of which is herself involved in rottie rescue and to whom stray dogs of any breed can be taken) and have a network of foster homes for cats. They do not have a website but they have a column every week in the local papers. They will also help people who have to rehome a much loved animal for whatever reason. They have an arrangement with a local vet who will treat injured strays with the rescue footing the bill until the animal's owner is found.
The small band of volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds to allow them to do this work - running stalls at local markets, collecting mobile phones, holding auctions and dog shows etc - as well as caring for the animals, walking the dogs and undertaking pre and post home checks. They never destroy a healthy animal and are willing to enlist the help of behaviourists etc at the charity's expense if an animal needs extra help.
We have been priveleged enough to rehome two cats and our beautiful dog Flo from them, as well as taking two of their cats to my parents in Suffolk.
As I said they are a small local rescue who have been serving the local community - both animal and human - admirably for over thirty years and long may they continue to do so.

I would like to nominate the wonderful Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green, North West London for this generous offer. Registered Charity number 1077588.

I volunteer there and support The Mayhew because of their ethos to take in abandoned and stray dogs and provide a warm supportive environment for them until they are ready for rehoming. Many of these dogs have been horrendously mistreated and spend months in the care of the Home – but no healthy animal is destroyed and staff spend hours mending both physical and mental scars. The Mayhew also has a successful network of foster carers to ensure that dogs can spend time in a secure environment in someone’s home, getting used to be cared for and loved until the right adopter can be found.

Fosterers are particularly key to The Mayhew’s Pet Refuge scheme which provides temporary care for the pets of owners facing very difficult circumstances. This scheme has provided priceless support for victims of domestic violence and elderly people entering hospital. Keeping pet and owner together, when best for both of them, is something The Mayhew values highly. After all there is no point filling up more kennels at rescue centres

There are so many deserving dog charities out there, but what makes The Mayhew special is its commitment to tackling the causes of abuse and neglect. The Home is based in a less-affluent area of inner-London and has a team of four dedicated Animal Welfare Officers who work in the community to promote responsible dog ownership. Educating the community about bull terrier breeds, for example, is a top priority because of the current fashion for these breeds as ‘Status Dogs’. Because of this trend The Mayhew is inundated with both abandoned puppies and adult dogs like Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Staffie crosses, so the Home offers free neutering for bull breeds as well as low cost treatments at its Community Veterinary Clinic.

I hope that your kind donor will consider The Mayhew, both for its devotion to the dogs in its care and for its passionate commitment to addressing the root causes of animal mistreatment. For more information please visit www.mayhewanimalhome.org.

NESSR the Northern English Springer SpanielRescue is a very determined cause where all money does go to the dogs. While the name is breed spacific the cause is not and this year alone has seen Bassets,Labs, terriers and all types of spaniels. Given the time spent fundraising just to keep afloat it is a just cause. While a donation is asked no dog is turned away when the owners can't pay. Some they have on their books at present came because the owners could not afford the charges asked by other rescues. Every dog is spayed/neutered, microchipped and fully innoculated prior to being rehomed. At upward of £150 per dog the expences rise. Some also need specialist care which they recieve. Dogs are taken from the south coast to North of Scotland. Every member of staff is an upaid volunteer. Dogs are fosterd rather than kenneled while waiting on a new home. Personally while not a member of staff I am a foster home provider as are many others. The Website and forum is reaching 10,000 topics and 2000 members in two years which shows the commitment.

Helping people who have problems with their dogs and providing support after adpotion meaning more successful adoptions. A very worthy cause. Taking in other rescue dogs because their time has run out.

I am a welfare officer for the Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare UK. (NMWUK) The group do incredible work for the welfare of this magnificent breed. I own two Mastini and both are rescue. They are very loyal, love unconditionally and are the most adorable dogs. Members of the group work tirelessy to ensure all the dogs that come to them are cared for and rehomed as soon as possible in their new forever homes. No healthy dog is put to sleep and all behaviour problems are dealt with before rehoming. It is an all too common problem with giant breeds that the adorable wrinkly puppies soon grow to be big dogs and they are dumped, abandoned and left to starve. Bitches are pupped for their large litters fetching large amounts of money and then tossed aside. We endeavour to find the appropriate homes for these boys/girls and the only funding we receive is from the public. Please consider our group as part of the wonderful gift from your reader. I cannot explain the immense joy that is felt when a neaoplitan mastiff is successfully rehomed to an adoring family where they will thrive and finally live the happy life they all so deserve. Thank you for your time.

What a wonderful gesture from the donor, but how difficult to decide
who is most deserving. I would like to nominate Doris Banham Rescue who specialise in saving/rehoming death row dogs from the pounds, particularly staffies who are having such a terrible time at the moment thro being "status dogs " for thugs. The poem on their website "Nobody's Dog" written by the founder tells you all you need to know about the compassion that underlies their work. It moves me to tears every single time I visit the website .Check it out please!

Doris Banham are a wonderfully deserving charity who work tirelessly rescuing 'death row' pound dogs that would otherwise simply have no hope!

Many are bull breeds that are so often neglected. Expensive vet treatment is also frequently required for some once they leave the pounds.

They are without doubt one of the hardest working charities I know and every penny they raise goes to easing the suffering of dogs up and down the UK!

Without the Doris Banham Charity simply thousands of dogs would not be alive today!

What a wonderful, generous lady. I would like to nominate the Doris Banham Sanctuary. They do a marvellous job saving as many dogs as possible from being PTS, and finding new homes for them I rehomed 2 Staffies from them just over 3 years ago. They were 9 & 10 years old, and had been living in a bathroom. The 9 year old has brain damage, but Trudie James felt there was a home out there somewhere for them both, even though she had been advised to have him PTS, and try and rehome his mum on her own. She was determined to try to keep them together, and when we phoned her, wanting to rehome an oldie, she told us about them. We went to see them, and ended up bringing them both home that day. Unfortunately, we lost Tammy in January this year, but she left us her legacy, her son Ty, who we will continue to care for until his time comes to go to The Bridge. The volunteers at Doris Banham do such a great job to save as many dogs as possible, and really do deserve to be thought of to share in this wonderful gift. I know there are many deserving rescues, but for me, Trudie stood up for what she believed in, and that is that every dog deserves a chance for a forever home.

I would like to nominate Northern English Springer Spaniel Rescue (NESSR). This is a completely volunteer based non-profit making national charity which mainly rehomes unwanted Springer Spaniels. Recently, NESSR has been taking in numerous dogs of other breeds, especially Cocker Spaniels.
NESSR relies entirely on Fundraising events and donations to pursue its work. - all monies raised is "For the dogs" - the NESSR slogan.
NESSR have no kennel facilities, so all the dogs are fostered in volunteers homes, where they are assessed. All dogs are fully vaccinated, flead, wormed, microchipped and neutered before they are rehomed.
I have adopted 3 NESSR dogs and since moved on to be a fosterer and volunteer.
As mentioned before, NESSR uses all monies raised "for the dogs" and does not waste it on PR exercises. Even the website (www.nessr.net) and forum are hosted, maintained and administered by volunteers at no cost to NESSR.

I would like to nominate Animals In Need in Little Irchester. I have nothing but admiration for the dedication that Annette and Roy show to all the animals they rescue. All animals are loved and cared for whilst staying at the centre awaiting their forever home. Homechecking is carried out with the animals happiness and security as the priority. Some dogs have been there longer than others but this is simply because they need their special home and Annette and Roy will not risk making the wrong placement. They fully deserve recognition for their wonderful achievements. Barbara

Please consider HULA (home for unwanted and lost animals)
They really work hard to make sure
that the dogs they rehome only go to suitable new forever homes.
They rely completely on kind hearted people who support the
regular open days where volunteers
work so very hard to make sure that
these days bring in the money that is needed so badly. New dog kennels
needed so very much, it would be a
dream come true if the money was made avoilable by this generous lover of dogs.

I would Really like to reccomend Hula animal rescue as We do a lot of work with dogs and cats ect, We are looking to upgrade the dog kennels as we all feel that this would benefit our rescued dogs while they are waiting for a new home. All the money we raise through our popular open day's soe's indeed go straight back to the animals that are in our care and not admin or paper work.

We have an army of volunteer dog walkers that put a lot of time and commitment into trying to find all the dogs that we take in lovely new homes.

Hula is a registared charity - the charity number is 1094115.

If Hula is chosen I think that the money will be put straight into the kennel area and hopefully will make the rescued dogs a little bit more happier while they wait for new loving homes.

Perhaps this generous dog loving lady should consider setting up her own charitable trust, she can nominate trustees to carry out her wishes and make grants to deserving causes. This would help smaller rescues that do not have charitable status in their own right. a competesnt accountant or solicitor should be able to give proper advice.

I would like to nominate Four Paws Animal Rescue (South Wales). I have been volunteering for Four Paws for almost a year now and help to fundraise and foster dogs when needed. Four Paws works tirelessly to ensure that all of the dogs who are subject to the put to sleep policy at the local pound are given another chance to find their forever homes. No problem is too large and no dog too small!! I would also like to nominate Four Paws as it not only provides for the animals in its care but has created a wonderful community where people from all different walks of life can come together under the common cause of wanting to help animals. This donation is a wonderful gesture and I know it will go to help many vulnerable adults.

Many Tears Animal Rescue in Wales is a small rescue that saves many hundreds of Dogs and Cats from being put to sleep. They work so hard to re-home ALL dogs and cats - working with behaviourists and other volunteers and workers to rehabilitate dogs who's behaviour would otherwise make them unable to have new, safe and happy homes.
They take ex-breeding dogs, dogs on "death row", dogs rescued from abuive homes, every dog is accepted, loved, respected and in some cases re-trained.
I can't think of a more deserving centre and I know they would be absolutely thrilled to be able to benefit from such a generous donation.

Just wanted to add - many smaller rescues just can't afford to become registered charities and the red tape that goes along with it often causes them more problems. It would be lovely if rescues that are not necessarily registered as a charity could be considered. These are the ones who really need the help and would benefit the most I believe.
Thank you.

I would like to nominate Guernsey Animal Aid. This charity was originally set up to deal with a feral cat problem we had in the island (part of the UK) but now helps any animal in need. One of their biggest aspects is now rehoming dogs, mostly from the mainland, here in Guernsey. Many of the dogs are ones that other charities have not been able to home, due to the numbers needing help, or dogs that are on death row, some with only days left before their time is up.

Their founder, Sue Vidamour, works exceedingly long hours and all help is voluntary. She has had to put up with some quite severe persecution, just because she will not say no to an animal in need.

Although this charity is not solely for dogs in need, their integrity is such that, if they were one of the lucky chosen beneficiaries of this amazing offer, they would ensure the money was spent purely on the dogs.

What a truly lovely idea and i know whatever charities you choose will be hugely greatful. I would like to nominate No. 1094115
HULA (Home for Unwanted & Lost Animals)based in Aspley Guise.
This a lovely charity who would be delighted by a substantial donation such as this. I have volunteered here for the past year and have been really impressed by the Love and care they give to the animals that find themselves there. Whether they are there for a short or long stay they are all treated with love and respect and everything is done to make the animals' stay there as stress free as possible. They have a non destruct policy and will put the time and dedication into rehabilitating, harder to rehome, animals and trying to find them a loving home with the perfect family.
I know HULA need and would appreciate a gift such as this and the animals would massivly benefit.
Thank you.

I'd like to nominate Pawz For Thought, who are a tiny rescue dedicated to helping and homing animals in Sunderland and the surrounding area. In the cash-strapped NE of England every penny has to be struggled for, so every penny is spent carefully as a result, all for the good of the animals.

I'd also like to nominate Daneline, who are a Great Dane rescue homing nationwide. We have a dog from them and they have been a wonderful support, but these gentle giants who are so easily abused cost a lot of money to put right and keep right, so again every penny counts.

What a wonderful thing for that lady to do, and what a task to choose who benefits.
I would like to nominate Keiths Rescue Dogs of Skegness Lincs. This is a small local charity run by nine trustees and groups of helpers. I am proud to say I am one of them. It was founded in 2000 by Keith himself and has helped hundreds of dogs, many of which would have died. Keith's takes in dogs for all sorts of reasons, they may have been abused ,abandoned or on death row. Usual capacity is 35/40 dogs but now is over sixty.Meeting the Approx costs of around £1000 per week is always a worry. None of the helpers are paid or receive any kind of out of pocket expenses, and everyone involved works willingly and with love. All money raised goes to the dogs. The web site is www.keithsrescuedogs.org.

I can understand this lovely lady wanting to keep this to registered charities, unfortunately some of the best rescues are not registered charitities for various reasons. Many don't manage to raise the money needed, others don't fit the criteria for some reason, doesn't mean they are not a good rescue. I can name several that are far better than any of the registered charities.

Barnsley and District Animal Welfare is a registered charity and quite a new rescue who are doing a good job. They take dogs from pounds and will take in dogs over the weekend when the Dog Warden isn't working.

Also The Oldies Club do a very good job at finding homes for older dogs that wouldn't otherwise be rehomed.

I would like to recommend Many Tears Animal Rescue
Sylvia and her team work tirelessly to help dogs and cats find homes. Some of the dogs have great medical problems and would be overlooked by most larger rescues as un-homeable. Sylvia however believes they have suffed so much in their short lives, the are entiled to a chance of a loving home. She makes sure they receive the treatment they need, sometimes costing thousands. Each life is special says Sylvia and every dog has a perfect home waiting, it just takes a little longer to find sometimes!
I have adoped 3 dogs from Many Tears. I also Foster for them. Without Many Tears thousands of dogs will die, without ever knowing kindness and love.

Doris Banham Dog Sanctuary. The highest number of stray dogs in the UK are found in Yorkshire and London. London strays are often rescued by Battersea so Doris Banham target the Yorkshire pounds. Many of which put the dogs to sleep if unclaimed after seven days. Last year Doris Banham rescued 3,117 dogs and either found rescue spaces for them all or rehomed the ones nobody would offer places for. The financial strain of this almost crippled the charity and for a few months they had to close their doors to the pound dogs and concentrate on rehoming the existing dogs in their care. £25,000 would enable them to save many more lives, give more behavioural therapy for dogs struggling with issues and give the charity a firm financial basis to work on. More vans and kennel spaces would result in more dogs lives being saved. There isn't one paid employee working for this charity. It is all totally run by volunteers and on donations from the public. Please help Doris Banham continue this work and to save even more lives.

The Ark also regularly take in a lot of older dogs and do fantastic work to find them homes. I know that in this current financial climate, they are finding things very difficult financially and at present are not able to help as many dogs as have previously been able to and would like to continue to do. As one of the smaller sanctuaries a contribution of this type will make the funding more significant impact.

A donation such as this would make a massive difference to the Sanctuary and allow them to continue their superb work helping dogs across England, removing them from undignified conditions and stressful existences.
The Sanctuary really would appreciate this assistance and more importantly ensure that the assistance would be wisely spend on collecting, rehabilitating and rehoming loving dogs .

There are many small rescue groups, throughout the U.K. who would benefit tremendously from such a generous legacy (and from much smaller amounts) but cannot think of any more deserving than Doris Banham Sanctuary. This rescue is one of the few who actually pick up every dog from dog pounds, leaving none behind. Many of these dogs have already been overlooked by other rescue groups. You only need look at their site: www.dogsos.co.uk to see that they have mostly staffies, rotties, elderly, or sick dogs looking for their forever home. Trudie James who runs Doris Banham (in memory of her late mother) works tirelessly to move these dogs to safety...often with time against her. As far as I know they are also the only rescue group who actually pay for veterinary treatment for the dogs, whilst they are still in the pound. The volunteers are totally dedicated, often funding trips from their own pocket (although Trudie supplies the vehicles). Doris Banham has no regular income, by way of salaries, and exists purely on donations. I don't know how they have managed to keep going so long but, with the help of a legacy like this, they could continue to save stray dogs for many years to come.
A big 'thank you' to whoever has decided to make this unselfish gesture, from all the dogs your generosity helps to save. It may also be worth considering giving a lesser amount to a higher number of small rescues?

The Registered Charity: Valgrays Border Collie Rescue do such good work for this breed. Valgrays is a tiny rescue (based around Val' own house). They do not have a formal kennel centre, nor are there any paid staff. Every helper is a volunteer to support Val in her quest to keep saving collies. Alot are taken from 'pound' situations where they are due to be put to sleep. In 2008 70 dogs were rehomed by Valgrays and this is a huge amount considering the size of the rescue. Valgrays do not spend on admin etc as there are no paid staff. I hope that Valgrays would be considered. www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com

I would like to nominate Sheffield Dog Rescue for this generous donation.

We are a small,no kill, registered charity dedicated soley to helping dogs in need. We currently operate by leasing a handfull of kennels from a boarding establishment. Being in a large city with only a couple other sheffield based rescues, we are frequently faced with having to turn numerous dogs away as we do not have the room. Our dream would be to purchase our own kennels and have outdoor compounds for the dogs to spend some play and stimulation time, away from the mundane life of kennels. This donation would enable us to rescue more dogs and provide a safe, secure rehabilitation environment until permanent homes can be found for them.

It would be a dream come true for us and the dogs of Sheffield and surrounding areas.

I hope you can consider us

Many many thanks

I would like to nominate: PAWS Rescue Wales - Providing Animals With Sanctuary.

PAWS is a registered charity which saves dogs given up from private homes/farms, and from Welsh pounds before their PTS date. There are very few rescue groups working with these pounds in north Wales, and if they were to go under, lots of dogs would be needlessly destroyed.

I nominate Valgrays Border Collie Rescue, (www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com) Val runs these charity almost single handly & not only rehomes Border collies but has rescued many extremely traumatised dogs, she turns these dogs around into beautifull happy trusting dogs & they go on to live happy lives in their forever homes.

In 2008 they found homes for 70dogs, many go on to Obedience & Agility homes or collie savvy homes, which for border collies is essential that they have 'jobs' to do.

Without a job or the wrong home these dogs end up back in kennels & find themselves looking for yet another new home.

Border collies are the ferrari of the dogs world, they often do not do well in kennels, so prospective adoptee's pass them by, Val takes these dogs from other dog homes or those that are in the pounds & are due to be pts, finds them good suitable homes.

I would love to see Valgrays considered for a donation from this grant, to help them to continue there wonderful work,

I would like to nominate GLWR (greyhound and lurcher welfare rescue) www.glwr.org.uk as I got my greyhound from there almost 3 years ago and they had only just set up then due to the massive amount of homes needed for greyhounds after races had been shut down in order for these dgos to still live and find new loving families. They work so hard to rescue and find perfect homes for these dogs and often need to hold fundraising activities in order to continue - i think personal money is also spent here as they spend every penny they receive looking after these dogs and making them weel enough and happy enought o start their lives again. My dog Fudge was rescued from Ireland after wandering the streets for years and had already had 2 homes before mine. It was through no fault of her own and is a perfect and stunning dog. GLWR helped me out to find the prfect dog for me and contiued supporting me with any questions and queries afterwards. They still like to keep in contact and ask how Fudge is doing and have a genuine interest and love for all the dogs they save and support!!! The genorous grant hat is up for consideration would be well received and spent solely on the benefit and welfare of the greyhounds/lurchers they rescue.

Hi I am Val who runs Valgrays Border Collie and Animal Rescue(established since 1978 and we are a registered charity) over the years we have homed so many collies and collie types...
funding is always a big issue - we are always in urgent need of more..our vet bills are always high...but we urgently need more funding to get some more kennels and land which would be our biggest dream.with all the problems G.B.has at the moment we are now turning dogs away because we do not have space.
We are a very small rescue service but the turn round of the collies is amazing we always find lovely homes. We also take in many poundies who would be put to sleep if we did not offer a space for them...but without funding we cannot help these poor unwanted dogs...we have also taken in cats, and we have some ponies here as well..please consider valgrays we have struggled along for years to keep mans best friend safe. thankyou.

I would like to nominate Sighthound Welfare Trust (Charity no. 1114709).

Sighthound Welfare Trust (SWT) is only a small, entirely voluntary, organisation but is one that is working hard to help sighthounds (greyhounds, galgos, lurchers) across not only the UK but also in Ireland and Spain.

Despite having a small income the charity is determined to get the best for the hounds and certainly doesn’t have lots of money just sitting in a bank account when it can be making a real difference. Although voluntary the charity prides itself on being as efficient and effective as possible; it doesn’t have any administration costs and keeps the fundraising budget to a minimum. Further information can be found on the charity’s record (www.charity-commission.gov.uk) or upon request from the charity directly. As a small organisation such sum would make a truly awesome difference to the impact the charity can have in working towards the end of abuse, neglect and exploitation of sighthounds.

Although not directly caring for dogs the charity helps assist with their rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming in a number of ways. This has involved grants for operating on badly abused and abandoned dogs; provide kennelling fees for dogs that might otherwise have been pts as well supporting the general veterinary costs of many other sighthound rescues. This approach to supporting a number of organisations is one which the charity is rightly proud of, as one supporter has suggested; “SWT doesn't fund a specific rescue, but donates to the charities that really need it, when they really need it. It makes us all more aware of what is going on and helps make us determined to change things for the better”. The charity has also been instrumental to helping find happy homes for hounds not just across the UK but as far afield as Germany and USA. The online website and forums in particular help raise awareness of sighthound welfare issues and also allow a friendly atmosphere for likeminded owners to chat about their hounds as well as share advice and support.

The charity prides itself on the principle of doing what it can where it can and this is reflected not only through our welfare work but also in the diversity of its volunteers (which includes people with disabilities and across all ages, genders and backgrounds); this helps make the charity such a dynamic and innovative organisation.

More information on the charity visit www.sighthounds.org.uk or to get a real flavour of the organisation, take a look at the online forums at www.sighthounds.org.uk/forums.

I would whole heartedly like to recommend The Doris Banham Sanctuary who work wonders on such a shoe string budget. They rescue pound dogs - any age, breed etc - even sick dogs and dogs that would be hard to rehome and find them rescue placements until the dog can be rehomed. They don't have fancy uniforms, or even their own kennels and no paid staff just dedicated dog loving volunteers - even the website is paid for and run by a volunteer - and yet manage to save thousands of dogs each year from needless destruction. If ever there was a charity that deserves a helping hand, this is right up there.

I would like to nominate Val of Valgrays in Surrey. Website: www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com. I have re-homed two wonderful collies from her. She is a lovely person, very capable and has been extremely supportive. I have noticed that quite a few of the collies (and other breeds) she has successfully re-homed would otherwise have been put to sleep, so her work is invaluable in re-homing these lovely dogs.

My vote would have to go to the Doris Banham Dog Sanctuary. The work their volunteers do rescuing and re-homing 'death row' dogs is incredible (3117 saved last year alone!), and the difference this extra funding would make to their struggle would be fantastic. Plus it has always been their policy for ALL funds to go towards actual dog care, rather than paying for admin and staff.

They work extremely hard across the whole of the country often traveling ridiculous distances at all hours of the day to deal with cases.
The joy they have brought not only myself and a whole host of others cannot be measured. The good they do for an often neglected aspect of the dog community certainly reaps huge rewards for both the dog and their new owners.

The generosity of people where animals are concerned never ceases to amaze me, what a wonderful kindhearted lady. This can also be said of Val who virtually singlehandedly runs the small but busy Valgrays Border Collie Rescue centre. These lovely dogs have so many different reasons for needing a new home and Val has unique knack of recognising their needs and can match the right dog to the right owner so that they can settle in and become part of the family just like our dog Meg. The centre may be small but it makes a big difference to a lot of lives, both animal and human, please consider including them in this very generous donation.

would like to nominate HULA animal rescue in Aspley Guise Bedfordshire as they rely on volunteers and are in desparate need of new kennels for their dogs. Every penny raised always goes directly to the care and welfare of the animals. The only paid staff are the wonderful animal carers that are on call 24/7 and Linda who is part-time back up to the others, receptionist, telephonist, etc. etc. the rest is done by volunteers. The charity reference is No. 1094115. Sometimes the dogs only get walked once a day and they have introduced a caravan so dogs can learn to live in a home environment again. All volunteers work so hard and this money would really benefit the dogs in a way we can only dream of.

Hi, I am the Founder and Administrator of Southern Lurcher Rescue here in the South of England. Not one penny of any money raised goes on administration payments. I myself work over 14 hours a day rescuing and caring for the hounds in the South and Barney who co-runs the rescue with me does the same. We take no remuneration and I can no longer do any paid work because of our committments to the dogs in our care. We have volunteers who endlessly give their time and expertise, and waver any chance of re-couperating costs. They are fostering, transporting, homechecking and supporting new adopters. We are all here for the hounds. A poster before commented that a "Charity" would have overheads. This little Charity became a Charity because we were willing to become "Public".
This means that all accounts of the "Charity" are open to the public and must be published. We are proud to have it made known that with less than a budget of £10,000 last year we have managed to treat, neuter, microchip and rehome over 50 dogs. Our vets bills of that £10,000 last year were £7,000.
That is what being a "Charity" is about.
Being a "Charity" is not having grand funding, it is about being open and there for everyone.
So, I am in complete agreement with the lady who does, saying that the grants should only be open to registered "Charities".
We are proud to be Charity Reg. No. 1126665 and we are even more proud of the lovely people that have made Southern Lurcher Rescue able to rehome 97 dogs in just under 22 months.
If what we do isn't running on a shoestring, we are running threadbear.
But we do it... because we care.
God bless. x

Doris Banham Dog Rescue - No dog is ever turned away by the charities founder Trudie James and her band of hardworking volunteers. We have rehomed 2 staffordshire bull terriers from them over the last two years - our first an 8 year old boy who nobody wanted because he had a past history of skin cancer - our second a very lively 3 year old abused dog who had never known a family life. Without Trudie last year over 3000 dogs would have been "thrown away" and put to sleep by the pounds.

I would like to nominate Valgrays Border Collie Rescue in Surrey. It is a registered charity: www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com When I was looking for a rescue collie I did quite a bit of research and although all the charities are doing a great job, her website gave a tremendous amount of information. Valgrays really understands border collies and their needs. Valgrays seemed to match dogs to people exceedingly well. The home check was extremely thorough and I did indeed get the perfect girl for me. It is a very small rescue centre and Valgrays can only have a few dogs in at a time, however last year still managed to save and rehome 70 dogs. It is run almost single handedly by Val Phillips, with support from family and her friends. Her friend Shirley created and maintains the website for her. Val takes in many collies from the council 'pounds' who would otherwise be destroyed within 7 days. Reading the owner's stories on the website I can see that many Valgrays Collies have gone to wonderful homes and take part in agility and obedience.
Please please consider Valgrays as a worthy cause to support, it really does wonderful work.

I have the most wonderful cocker spaniel that came from HULA Animal Rescue in a little village called Aspley Guise, Milton Keynes. We fell in love when I used to be a volunteer dog walker at HULA (though I do think all dogs are beautiful. Monty has changed my life and I thank HULA from the bottom of my heart. Everyone there works tremendously hard and it is run by good people volunteering their time to care for unwanted animals. HULA have a new cattery that was very kindly donated - but are in desperate need of updating their kennels. The kennels do obviously function, but are some 30 + years old. It would be wonderful to if the Charity had funds to do this and make a lot of dogs that are there very happy - especially the long termers that sometimes seem to get overlooked.

Thank you very much for your time.

I'd like to nominate Greyhound Walks (www.greyhoundwalks.org.uk) we are a newly registered charity that was born out of an idea that a lady called Janet Peacock had. She advertised in a local paper for fellow greyhound owners to meet in a local park and walk their greyhounds together and swap tips and tails about greyhound rehoming.
This has grown into a regular walking group that invites all greyhound and other sight hound owners, and has an average of 60 dogs per walk, with our record currently standing at 128 hounds.
We offer a post-adoption service to new greyhound owners with a friendly forum for support and walks to help build the dogs confidence when they are homed. We hold regular fundraisers and make collections on walks with all the money going to local greyhound rehoming kennels, many of which aren't registered as charities themselves and rely heavily on public donations.
Please consider us.

I know lots of our lovely volunteers and adopters have already suggested Oldies Club, so I'm just leaving a note about our costs and operating procedure. Oldies Club is a registered charity.

Oldies Club only deals with dogs aged over 7 years. Although we do take dogs from pound situations, because all our dogs go into foster homes, not kennels, we can't take many directly from pounds.

Our dogs mostly come in surrendered by their owners, but that does not mean they are not at risk. We take dogs that are homeless as a result of death, divorce and illness, and many of these are dogs that would be put to sleep.

It makes a big difference to someone who is terminally ill or who is becoming homeless, or to a worried relative, if they can be sure that their dog will be cared for and found a loving new home.

Many oldies we take in have not been exercised or taken to the vet for years, so it costs us on average £300 to get each dog fit and healthy, ready for rehoming.

A donation of this size would help around 84 oldies find loving new homes. We have no paid staff and spend the vast majority of money that is donated on vet bills (can do a detailed breakdown if required).

I think this is very generous of the person concerned. Please could I nominate Plantatin Dog Rescue which is a registered rescue charity based in Stamford Bridge in North Yorkshire. They are a dog rescue who take in dogs from the Yorkshire area who are due to be put to sleep. They then care for them, work with them and show them loads of love until they find a home. The team is small, just Ruth, Emma and matthew provided care 7 days a week together with their group of dedicated volunteers. We got a rescue male Staffy from them last June and he'd been there for 2 years. He'd originally had some behavioural problems but they worked hard to retrain him and he is a fantastic dog, the most gentle, loving and funny dog you could meet. We have never had a single probelm with him from day 1. I'm proud to be associated with this charity.

As a national animal protection group in the UK (South West Animal Protection and Greyhound Crusaders) we would like to firstly say a big thank you to the very kind person who will be making some donations to the worthy chairites that have been nominated. We would love to nominate the Doris Banham rescue run by Trudie James
Registered Charity Number 113372 http://www.dogsos.co.uk/ please visit their website. Please see the info below taken from their website-

Quote- "Doris Banham was a dedicated animal lover throughout her life who sadly died in November 2001. The following year in June 2002 her daughter, Trudie James, decided to honour her life and dedication to animals by establishing The Doris Banham Sanctuary.
The charity was set up to help all animals, but as we became increasingly aware of the heart breaking needless destruction of unclaimed dogs in dog pounds, we vowed to help them and the charity has developed to provide an essential life saving rescue service for these forgotten dogs.
We are a non-profit organisation and rely totally on fundraising and donations to save these animals." Unquote

Trudie James is a committed animal lover and has tirelessly saved many many dogs from being euthanased. Please do support her truly wonderful work, £25,000 would help tremendously and would help to save many more lives and help alleviate the plight of dogs in pounds waiting for the lethal injection.
Trudie's Mum Doris must be so proud of her daughter who is helping to save these precious lives.
Thank you and good luck to all the nominees!!!

I would like to nominate Doris Banham Dog Rescue. Bullie breeds, Staffies and Staffie crosses, and breeds such as Rottweillers are at crisis point in the UK. Trudie James has saved so many of these dogs from euthanisation in pounds. I dare not think of how many of these poor dogs lives would have been wasted if it weren't for Trudie! This amount of money would enable the charity to continue their vital work in saving the lives of these dogs, who are so carelessly cast aside, in such vast numbers.

I would like to nominate the Registered Charity; Valgrays Border Collie Rescue (Surrey). It is a tiny rescue centre and yet managed to save and rehome 70 dogs in 2008. It is run almost single handedly by Val, with support from her family and friends. Val takes in alot of 'pound' collies who are under threat of put to sleep if they are not taken from the pound. Alot of Valgrays Collies have gone to wonderful homes and compete in agility and obedience. Please consider Valgrays as a worthy cause to support. www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com

Please may I nominate Poplar Farm Kennels in Cambridgeshire, a dog rescue run by, and entirely at the expense of, it's two owners, Dave and Rachel, with the help of a small band of volunteers. No dog is put to sleep at Poplar Farm unless he cannot be cured and is suffering, regardless of any expense, time or difficulty caring for him might take.

Dave and Rachel are known and loved for taking in the old, the problem dogs, those which no-one else wants, and have a particular reputation for accepting and caring for otherwise unwanted dogs who are suffering from epilepsy.

As with the best of rescues, Poplar Farm assess their dogs, homecheck potential adoptive families, neuter, treat and inoculate the dogs and go to every possible length to ensure that the home which a dog will go to is the right home. Those who cannot find homes for whatever reason stay with Dave and Rachel for life.

As a volunteer for PFK, I know how hard Dave and Rachel work and how utterly dedicated they are to their dogs. I know too that despite working at least an 18 hour day, 365 days a year, where Christmas is just another day and a day off a mere fantasy, despite the tears that they shed for the cruelty they see and sadnesses and losses they face, they never are less than welcoming, friendly and hospitable and they never, ever, let their dogs down, whilst still managing to help in campaigns for dog rescues elsewhere. Added to this they are the first to offer a helping hand to others and their generosity and kindness is awesome.

I consider myself privilidged to know them, honoured to be a volunteer for PFK and am often humbled to the point of tears to see their tireless love and devotion to the dogs which are less fortunate than our own. A donation like this would enable them to build more kennels and save more lives and whilst I can think of many deserving rescues I can't think of any which are more so than Poplar Farm Kennels.

They are unique - you only ever meet one Dave and one Rachel in a lifetime... and that's only if you are extremely lucky.

My vote has go to DORIS BANHAM DOG RESCUE. Their dedicated group of volunteers work tirelessly to save dogs on death row in pounds. They are extra special because they don't leave any dogs behind - they save them all, regardless of breed and regardless of age. They run on a shoe-string, although their running costs are HUGE. A donation like this would be an absolute god send. Please consider them for a portion of your very generous grant.

I would like to put forward HULA RESCUE in Apsley Guise near Woburn. They do wonderful job caring for and finding homes for lost and unwanted dogs, many of which have been abandoned on the streets around Milton Keynes just because they are old and ill. Hula find permanent and foster homes for them, but look after them for life if this is not possible. They reabilitate the dogs if they have suffered from a trumatic life, so they can try and fit into a new and loving home, such the lovely small terrier they have had had for a while called Holly. It is a small centre, that has only a few staff and relies mainly on the help of volunteers. They are in need of a new dog housing unit and it would be wonderful if you could consider them for part of your most generous grant.

i agree that ManyTears is a fantqastic rescue centre known for the wonderful work they do with the collies finding them responsible, loving and permanent homes after they have been educated about people, homes, etc.

Another great rescue, specialising in Border Collies is Valgrays Border Collie Rescue which works along similar lines to ManyTears and finds loving permanent homes for the collies they are asked to help, with responsible people.

Yet another Rescue which offers help not only to dogs but also to cats, rabbits, ferrets, horses and even brds, is Wythall Animal Sanctuary based south of Birmingham. This is a small charity run by a dedicated band of people and they would be thrilled to receive any help at all from this legacy.

What a wonderful person this must be to have created such a legacy. I wish I had known him/her and hope he/she will realise the happiness their kindness this will bring.

I would like to nominate Registered Charity: Valgrays Border Collie Rescue.

I am the proud owner of two lovely dogs that were rehomed to me from Valgrays Border Collie Rescue and know first hand what a wonderful job Val Phillips does.

I understand that last year around 70 dogs were rehomed including border collies from council pounds that were saved from being put to sleep. Many of these dogs go on to complete in agility and obedience.

Please consider Valgrays Border Collie Rescue as a worthy charity to support.

What a wonderful gesture!
There are so many deserving charities, who, with the economic climate must be strugling with the cost of their rescue work, but the one I would like to nominate is THE BORDER COLLIE TRUST at Rugeley.

We would like to nominate HULA for this most generous of donations.
(Hula Rescue Registered Charity 1094115)
We cannot praise this small rescue centre enough for all their hard work, dedication, devotion and outstanding care, they bestow on all the animals in their care. The staff and volunteers go that extra mile to ensure the well-being of their charges.
All the people at HULA are special and a wonderful donation of this size would go a long, long way in helping them make the lives of these needy animals that much better and perhaps help EVEN MORE unfortunate animals.
They have a non-destruct policy for all healthy animals in their care.
They also do all they possibly can for those dogs that have been thrown out on the streets for being old and ill. Recently two big dogs (a Bullmastiff dog 7 yrs apprx and Bullmastiff X bitch 10 yrs approx) were brought to HULA. Not wanting to split these two dogs up as they were so close and because of their ages and the fact that, it was discovered later, the 7yr old boy had lymphoma, wasn’t going to be an easy job to re-home them. The staff and volunteers put their hearts and souls into looking after these dogs and did all they could to make their stay at HULA as comfortable as possible. They did a fantastic job. This dedicated team never gave up on these dogs and eventually they found a foster home for them.
But it doesn’t stop there, HULA will continue to support these dogs with ever necessary vet bills.
Their commitment to the dogs’ and other animals’ quality of life is paramount.
HULA truly is a HOME for Unwanted and Lost Animals for as long as they need.
Please consider them. Thank you.
