The 30 most deserving dog charities in Britain

Please also read http://coldwetnose.blogspot.com/2009/06/small-is-beautiful.html for guidance before posting a comment!

One of our wonderful readers has just contacted us for some help. She is looking to identify 30 of the most deserving dog-related charities as she has an elderly friend intending to leave approx £25k to each.
Her friend is keen to identify charities that are not going to use the money for PR or admin, she wants the money to make a real difference to dogs.
Quite a challenge!
We can think of quite a few, but 30 is a fabulous number.
Who would you recommend? What a great idea - making such a difference to so many.
I think the quest could make a great article.
Please let us know the charities you are familiar with for whom a £25k legacy could make a huge difference.

There has been a huge response and if we're not careful some of the tiniest charities may get lost as they don't have the numbers of supporters to campaign for them. Can I ask if your charity or point is already covered in comments please don't post again, we're not looking necessarily for the most popular charities - just trying to identify the ones who will make the best use of the dosh to help dogs.
The lady has confirmed that only registered charities would be eligible.
"The only criteria is that the recipients must use the money solely on the dogs, and that they are registered charities. I know that this is going to leave a lot of causes in the cold, but how else can I make sure that the money is used properly?"

We would like to nominate HULA for this most generous of donations.
(Hula Rescue Registered Charity 1094115)
We cannot praise this small rescue centre enough for all their hard work, dedication, devotion and outstanding care, they bestow on all the animals in their care. The staff and volunteers go that extra mile to ensure the well-being of their charges.
All the people at HULA are special and a wonderful donation of this size would go a long, long way in helping them make the lives of these needy animals that much better and perhaps help EVEN MORE unfortunate animals.
They have a non-destruct policy for all healthy animals in their care.
They also do all they possibly can for those dogs that have been thrown out on the streets for being old and ill. Recently two big dogs (a Bullmastiff dog 7 yrs apprx and Bullmastiff X bitch 10 yrs approx) were brought to HULA. Not wanting to split these two dogs up as they were so close and because of their ages and the fact that, it was discovered later, the 7yr old boy had lymphoma, wasn’t going to be an easy job to re-home them. The staff and volunteers put their hearts and souls into looking after these dogs and did all they could to make their stay at HULA as comfortable as possible. They did a fantastic job. This dedicated team never gave up on these dogs and eventually they found a foster home for them.
But it doesn’t stop there, HULA will continue to support these dogs with ever necessary vet bills.
Their commitment to the dogs’ and other animals’ quality of life is paramount.
HULA truly is a HOME for Unwanted and Lost Animals for as long as they need.
Please consider them. Thank you.

HULA No. 1094115(Homes for Unwanted and Lost Animals) I have worked as a volunteer since 1979. Leanne (above) has put the points. If the dogs had better living conditions life would be much easier for the staff and volunteers as well. It would be so good to see the dogs housed more comfortably.

Another vote for Wiccaweys - Paul and Sarah do a fantastic job they are completely dedicated to helping these wonderful dogs. Please consider them for such a generous donation Julie
Four Paws Animal Rescue said…
I would like to nominate Four Paws Animal Rescue (South Wales).

We are a small independent registered charity (number 1117893) based in South Wales.
We try to help any animal in need—those that are unwanted or in danger (in one area the local authority puts dogs to sleep if we can’t take them on the 8th day). We don’t have a rescue centre as such and as far as possible try to foster animals in a home environment where they can be assessed and cared for without the stresses of kennels (however, we do rent these when needed).

Primarily, however, we tend to take in and rehome dogs, which is where our expertise is. When we do receive cats and other small animals we may enlist the help of other more specialist rescue organisations if we can’t rehome them ourselves.

All our animals receive veterinary care if needed, are vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, and if old enough they are neutered.

We rehome all over the UK and all prospective new owners are homechecked.

We are also entirely self-funded.

The money would be used to enable us to pay for medical treatment (routine and anything else), neutering dogs over 6 months, kennel spaces (when required), food and transportation. Basically enabling us to save the lives of dogs who would have otherwise been put-to-sleep or abandoned.

It will also enable us to continue to provide permanent foster homes for those dogs we are unable to rehome due to medical reasons. And provide additional bahaviourist back-up for dogs that require this. For example, Mylo a Rottie who was with us for a year in kennels before he found his home.

During 2007-2008 we rehomed over 175 dogs, plus found at least an additional 100 rescue spaces for other dogs who would have otherwise been put-to-sleep.

The benefit of the generous donation would be measured by the number of dogs saved and the happy success stories that would be received as well. All of our dogs are neutered if old enough, and those younger have to be neutered when they are old enough, so this prevents future unwanted litters.

I would like to nominate many tears animal rescue as the level of care that is given to the dogs is outstanding and no dog or cat is ever given up on. On top of that every single member of staff and every volunteer cares so much for each of the dogs and a strong team and charity has developed from this passion and love for the dogs. This charity do not just dedicate there time and energy to finding homes and love for every animal they are also working on making serious changes to the well being of animals everywhere in educating people and owners in what is best for there dogs.

I would like to nominate Tia Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue Centre in Sowerby. For over 10 years Deb and Bob have devoted all their time to rescuing mistreated, traumatised, starved and neglected greyhound and lurchers. They are an independent non-for-profit orgnisation and operate a no-kill policy, refusing to give up on any dog whom they can bring back to health, no matter how much that may cost. Receiving no money at all from the racing industry, they rely soley on the generosity of the public, organising many events. They also raise awareness of the dreadful plight of these lovely animals once they have retired from racing or been abandoned because they did not make the grade. I adopted Judy from Tia, she is an absolute joy and is having a great time in her retirement home.

Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue near Halifax. For over 10 years, they have been committed to rescuing and rehoming stray, abandoned and ex-racing greyhounds and lurchers. Tia is an independent not-for-profit organisation and does not receive money from the racing industry. They rely solely on the public's generosity to provide support for dogs who have often been mistreated, traumatised, starved or neglected and to provide them with a new life.

It is so difficult to choose from so many, but as a family we have now rescued 4 dogs from Debs in the past few years. She and Bob work tirelessly yet always have a smile and are forever inspirational.

I'd like to nominate Tailends in North Devon, www.tailends.co.uk. This small charity takes in elderly and terminally ill dogs and looks after them in a home environment for the rest of their lives. The dogs are often but not exclusively greyhounds and come from situations of neglect and abuse, often without having received any veterinary care during their life so they may suffer from crippling diseases, untreated infections & old injuries. Tailends gives them love, good food, the best veterinary care and appropriate walks, often being able to considerably extend the life of these old dogs, but if not however short a time they have at Tailends, they are at least pain free & loved, often for the first time in their lives. Tailends, run by Angela Hogan, is truly heaven for these old dogs. Please consider them.

I would like to nominate Barnsley & District Animal Welfare as a very worthy registered charity. They don't take a penny for themselves & all monies raised goes towards rescuing dogs and finding them new forever homes. The helpers are out every weekend and in their spare time collecting and running charity stalls to raise much needed funds and they have saved a large number of animals from being put down.

G4U (Greyhounds for you) and GIN (Greyhounds in Need) have to be the most deserving of all the dog charities due to the sterling and selfless work they do relentlessly to rescue and re home retired greyhounds. Each dog is fostered prior to being available for rehoming so that their particular needs are met and they have an accurate character reference. All of which is essential to successfully match them with the right family and place them in a loving and caring home for life. We have been fortunate enough to be entrusted to home Stigg, AKA Damion's Brother, who has enriched our lives immeasurably with his wonderful disposition - a real gentleman 'Mr Cool'. Please consider these two charities for a share of this legacy, which will enable them to continue their valuable work.

I would like to nominate TIA Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue. (www.tiagreyhounds.org.uk). Both our gorgeous Greys came from TIA and we can't praise the work they do highly enough. We nominate Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue in Hebden Bridge. They take in greyhounds that have been dumped and look after them so well but need help in doing this. Our boy and girl came from there 4 weeks ago and am so grateful to Tia for looking after them.

I would like to nominate two charities

Firstly Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare who not only re-home ex-racing greyhounds but also have recently opened up a 'Sanctuary' for greyhounds that will find it very hard to find a home due to behavioural or medical conditions. At the moment down the Sanctuary that have a lot of elderly or sick dogs that have very expensive vet bills and I know that long-term finances are of concern. Please visit their website www.hershamhounds.org to see what wonderful work they do - they could do so much with the money not only to secure the dogs' future but also to make their day to day lives more comfortable.
Although a branch of the RGT they do not get any funding and have to do all fundraising themselves.

Secondly I would like to nominate Tailends - a small charity run by a woman with a big heart who takes on old and ill dogs that have normally spent most of their lives in horrific conditions. Angela gives these dogs all the love and comfort they need for whatever time they have left.

Fidget has been with us 12 years and was rehomed by Labrador Rescue South East & Central. This caring charity does wonders for Labradors in need. Because of them we have Fidget and although he is getting on in years, soon to be 13, we hope to have him around for a lot longer yet. Please support this worthwile charity. They need all the help they can get to give Labradors a better life. Please consider them for part of your grant.

Firstly thanks again to the 'elderly friend', what a fanastic thing to do and how sad that there are so many posts on this website.
I would like to nominate Tia Greyhound resuce in Hebden Bridge Halifax. They are continually remhoming dogs but are continually bursting at the seams. Our Greyhound is the best thing that ever happened to us.

We would like to nominate Tia Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue. Deb does a fantastic job on a shoe string budget, she challenges those who abuse and maime these dogs and gives the dogs a second chance to have a happy loving life.

Deb never has enough space for the amount of dogs needing help but she some how manages to rescue each one and never turns a dog away.

Our greyhound from Tia saved my partners life by being with her every second of her journey through horrific breast cancer treatments. To this greyhound i am eternally grateful.

I'd like to propose Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE). Not surprisingly they rescue greyhounds and other sighthounds, from the racing industry and those found as strays. Because greyhounds are earmarked and easily identified many have their ears cut off to prevent identification, as well as often having other racing injuries. The vet bills can be huge but very rarely is a dog put to sleep if the charity can avoid it. they provide kennelling, foster homes and forever homes for the dogs, as well as initial training which is essential for these dogs who are usually not house trained and not socialised. Although initially based in the three counties of Herefordshie, gloucesterhsire and Worcestershire they are now represented as far north as Lancashire, south to Deveon and Cornwall, and East to Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. They really do a great job and all the money raised goes to support the dogs not the administration of the charity which is all on a volunteer basis.

I would like to nominate Tia Greyhound and Lurcher rescue at Sowereby bridge, Halifax. This is an independent charity rehoming lurchers and ex racing greyhounds or those dumped because they of no use to the racing industry. Vet bills alone per month are £4k and Tia relies soley on the help of volunteers fundraising all year round to stay open to look after these lovely dogs. I have 2 beautiful greyhounds Tiny and Mac and do not know how I would have got through 2008 recovering from breast cancer without Tia and my dogs. Please, please consider them for the possibility of the generous grant it would mean Deb and Bob could sleep at night not worring how to pay the bills.

I would like to nominate the Border Collie Trust GB for all the fabulous work that they do with abandoned Border Collies. They work so hard with traumatised, abandoned dogs and give them a second chance in life. They rely on the fundraising efforts of the many volunteers who support the Trust and also the ones who go along to walk the dogs and give them ome love. Many thanks to the Lady for having the wonderful idea of leaving a legacy to the deserving Dog Charities in Britain.

2 Fantastic greyhounds adopted me from Tia Greyhound Rescue, First Baron an 9 year old and then Laylay a 3 year old, these dogs need ALL the help they can, every little help, such rescues have no input from governmental bodies no from the fat cat facing industry. The abuse, neglect and horrific acts of cruelty which are hidden behind closed doors and a blind eye turned to this, these dogs are loyal, loving, placid and most of all not given the chance they truley deserve.....Spare a thought to all those that havent made the grade to deserve a loving home and say a prayer for those that were never given the chance....Emma.

I would like you to consider TIA Grehound and Lurcher Rescue Centre., Halifax.
Debs and Bob dedicate their whole lives to rescuing , caring for and rehoming these beautiful dogs. Their 'free' time is spent on tackling the greyhound racing industry head-on in an attempt to make them take up the responsibilities for the dogs when they are no longer able to make money for their owners.
Have a look on their website and see just how much is spent on vet bills alone!

Val Phillips has dedicated her life to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming collies through her small charity. She takes in the most traumatised and injured of this sensitive and proud breed, for whom she is their last hope. Her charity is big on TLC - we know, as we have just adopted one of her worst cases now nurtured back to health. But of course funding is always a major consideration. Please support Valgrays with a grant which will perpetuate this vital rescue work for the future. www.valgraysbcrescue.webs.com

I would like to nominate Tia Greyhound Rescue (www.tiagreyhounds.org.uk) 4 years ago we adopted a 1 year old ex-racer. Maydee Blue is now 5 years old and she is the most wonderful dog, and is loved by everyone who meets her.
Tia greyhound do fantastic work, but rely on volunteers and donations to survive, and at times this proves very difficult.
Please consider this charity for a part of your grant, they are currently running at maximum capacity, and your financial help would make a world of difference to so many dogs.Thank you

I would like to nominate Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue for the wonderful and inspirational job that they do in saving the lives of many abandoned and unwanted sighthounds - we got our 2 greyhound Girls from there at the beginning of May and they are amazing - but there are so many many more waiting ....

Also I would like to nominate the Oldies Club - our first adoption - a beautiful saluki/Greyhound cross Lady was from there and I think they do a great job helping out those dogs down on their luck at end of their lives

I'd like to nominate Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue in Cragg Vale, West Yorkshire. We got our beautiful black greyhound girl from there and she is the most fantastic pet anyone could wish for.

Hi,

I know that you have requested that Charities are only nominated for once but I just wanted to add, what I believe is crucial information.

Apart from the kennel hands who have to be there everyday come what may, everybody else from our secretary, our treasurer, our fundraiser's, etc are all voluntary.

We do not pay for PR and instead rely on the internet and word of mouth.

All our money goes on saving dogs and making their lives better.

Recently we undertook a new project called 'The Sanctuary' which was to become a haven for any dogs that for one reason or another could not find a home.

Sadly the cost of another block of kennels (rent, staffing, rates) and looking after 30 more dogs (food and bedding) combined with the credit crunch has meant that we are now losing money. At the moment we are desperately trying to cut corners and save money where we can, but we don't know what else we can do.

I would like to nominate The Little Dog Rescue. www.littledogrescue.co.uk

I am nominating TIA GREYHOUND AND LURCHER RESCUE (registered charity no 1105626) for this very generous award. Deb and Bob and their willing volunteers try to save as many Greyhounds and Lurchers as possible. Tia has rehomed nearly 1800 dogs over the last 12 years and also tirelessly campaign to try and improve the lot of racing hounds.
Every year it is harder and harder to raise the funds needed to continue this work. And every year there are more and more dogs needing rescuing.
If it wasn't for Tia I truly don't know what would happen to these lovely dogs. Well, actually I do - and it doesn't bear thinking about.
Tia operates a 'no kill' policy as they believe that no animal should be put to sleep because a home cannot be found immediately (sometimes not at all) or because it needs expensive veterinary treatment.
I used to be under the naive impression that all Greyhounds raced until they retired and then they were found a home! Ha! I now know what the real world is like!
I admire Deb and Bob tremendously for their hard work and dedication. I don't know how they do it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when there is never any light at the end of the tunnel (especially when you see the state of some of the dogs when they arrive, I certainly couldn't do it).
The dogs just keep coming in, each with their own tale to tell, each needing tlc and varying amounts of veterinary treatment and then needing a forever home of their own.
They just want someone to love them, a full tummy and a comfy bed to sleep on (preferably a comfy sofa actually!). It's not a lot to ask is it?
Please help Tia continue their vital work rescuing and rehoming stray, abandoned and often abused Greyhounds and Lurchers.
GRWE Vanessa said…
Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) gets my vote. GRWE rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes over 500 abused and abandoned greyhounds and greyhound crosses each year.

GRWE is run entirely by volunteers who work thoughout the country to find loving permanent homes for these beautiful dogs.

As the charity has no staff costs and doesn't own kennels (they rent spaces at commercial kennels), any grant to GRWE will directly help the 60 to 70 dogs in its care at any one time.

Check out their website www.grwe.com

Please consider Tia Greyhound and & Lurcher Rescue Registered Charity No. 1105626. They have so many dogs to rehome and they need help.
I would like to nominate Doris Banham Dog Rescue (registered charity - http://dogsos.co.uk )

I have been a volunteer with Doris Banham Dog Rescue for the last year. I can faithfully swear that every penny that gets donated to the charity goes straight into rescuing dogs off death row and transporting them to no-kill rescue spaces around the country. Nobody in the organisation gets paid and no money is spent on advertising.

Last year, Doris Banham Dog Rescue saved 3,100 dogs from being put to sleep in council pounds. On average, it costs about £35 to rescue each dog. This money goes to fuel costs (to drive dogs to rescues), vetinary costs and emergency boarding costs.

With £25,000 we could save around 714 dogs from being put to sleep. It would be so wonderful!
Anonymous said…
I would like to put forward Doris Banham Dog Rescue (www.dogsos.co.uk). they do a wonderful job of saving dogs on death row in the pounds. Majority of these dogs are staffies and babies at that. The cost of pound trips, vets bills and transport to other rescues or foster placements must be a huge strain and they are always bursting at the seams. I think they deserve some help

We nominate Many Tears as they are professional and caring in their approach towards finding unwanted and abused dogs happy homes with loving owners. We have fostered for them in the past and recently adopted a lovely ex-breeding cavalier who despite her ordeal is loving and gentle. They give dogs the respect they deserve and make a huge difference to the lives of many dogs, who without their attention would face being put to sleep or worse! Their standards are high and they display strong values towards dog-care and ownership. I hope you will consider them.

vesna cares passionatly about animal welfare in Greece.
Greece is suposed to have animal welfare, but you will never see it...the strays rely on people like her.The strays are shot, posioned, hanged, and generally treated appaliingly.Go anywhere out of the comfort zone of your hotel, to the hills and you will find dogs tied up on short chains in fields, with no water, food or human contact, covered in ticks, sores, and very underweight. This is just a bit of it.
Vesna relies on donations. She will try and save a stray & rehome it abroad. Please log onto the website,www.greekanimalrescue.com, for further info. She could really use the funds.Thankyou

Animal SOS Sri Lanka-a UK Registered Charity 1119902, is a small and dedicated charity working against tremendous odds to alleviate the appalling suffering of street dogs in Sri Lanka.
There are in excess of 2.5 million stray dogs in Sri Lanka struggling every day to survive disease, starvation, dehydration, car accidents and cruelty at the hands of humans.
Strays are mutilated, stoned, doused with fuel and boiling water, poisoned, kicked and beaten. Locals fear dogs because of the risk of rabies in the country.
Other dogs die alone on the streets from diseases like parvovirus, distemper, rabies, tick fever, or are injured by the roadside after sustaining horrific injuries- fractured spines and maggot infested wounds- suffering for days until death. They have no hope of help or veterinary care. Pups, particularly females, are dumped on rubbish tips where their eyes are pecked out by crows, or lie orphaned and helpless by the roadside slowly starving to death.
Animal SOS Sri Lanka has purchased 4 acres of land in the south of the country and has just completed building works for an emergency clinic-specifically for the strays.

The charity plans to implement a co-ordinated sterilisation/vaccination programs sweeping across area by area, humanely reducing the stray dog population and eliminating the risk of rabies in both humans and animals.
A fully implemented rabies control program can make Sri Lanka the 1st Asian country in 30 years to be free from the rabies virus.

Working in partnership with Sri Lanka, the charity will conduct national animal welfare education programs, dispelling myths and fears about strays and encouraging locals to be more accepting of healthier sterilised and vaccinated street dogs. Training and the sharing of skills between visiting western vets and local vets will also be promoted.
The charity will operate adoption schemes and offer a sanctuary base to disabled and vulnerable dogs that are unable to cope on the streets.

The charity consists of dedicated animal welfare campaigners who fund their own trips to Sri Lanka and have financed animal rescue work from their own pockets for many years before the formation of Animal SOS Sri Lanka in the autumn of 2006.
Now the emergency clinic is built and facilities are in place, the charity urgently needs funds to help as many strays as possible. A team of volunteer UK vets/vet nurses are visiting the project in Sri Lanka next month to help with this life saving work.

A £25,000 grant will enable the charity to sterilise, vaccinate and conduct blood tests for the lethal tick fevers for over 1500 dogs. It will save the lives of thousands more unborn and unwanted litters of puppies who suffer unimaginable misery on the streets of Sri Lanka.
Please consider this worthy cause.

I hope I'm not too late as May everyone stopped posting...

I would like to nominate Rescue Remedies. They are a very small, completely volunteer-based dog rescue and EVERY single penny raised goes to the care or the dogs. No one is paid a wage or expenses and everyone works extreemly hard on rescuing and rehoming dogs, many of which were on "death row". They do not "pick and choose" the most homeable dogs. Any money is like a Godsend to them, especially something this generous. A donation to them would save the lives of MANY dogs in need

I think they really do wonderful work and should be recognised for what they do!

I would like to nominate Animal SOS Lanka. I live in Sri Lanka and have seen first hand the gassing of strays on the street, the misery of animals pelted with stones. This charity has already persuaded the Government to abolish the cull policy and now there is a "no kill" policy instead. That has saved the lives of thousands of homeless dogs. The sanctuary they are setting up here will be the ONLY one of its kind in the South of the country and with their outreach programme and volunteer vets, they are hoping to reach out to the villages to work to eradicate rabies, a huge killer here. They are selfless hardworking people in a difficult environment. 25,000 pounds would go a long way to help build a clinic to treat animals....there is not even one X ray machine or microscope in the South of the whole country. I live here with lots of my own dogs and, if an X ray had been available, I could have saved the lives of several dogs hit by buses or cars and left to die slowly in the streets with undiagnosed internal injuries.
Please consider the thousands of animal lives this grant could save

My nomination is for a charity called SOS Sri Lanka the persons involved in this charity are working extremely hard to improve the lives of hundreds of animals in Sri Lanka which are suffering ill health and dying from starvation.

There is no one else to help these innocent souls and putting it frankly without this charity the animals actually have NO hope. SOS Sri Lanka has purchased a plot of land where they have built a veterinary clinic; this has been funded by hard work and from kind donations over many years. A project such as this takes such commitment and dedication it just takes over your life, I would love to see them receive a boost to there much needed funds to buy equipment for the clinic to treat animals today and for many years to come. ANIMAL SOS SRI LANKA IS RUN BY A DEDICATED SMALL TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS WHO FUND THEIR OWN TRIPS AND BUY MUCH NEEDED SUPPLIES, THE CLINIC IS BUILT AND BRITISH VETS ARE ON HAND TO VOLUNTEER SPAY AND NEUTER THE THOUSANDS OF STRAYS. I HAVE BEEN TO SRI LANKA WITH THE TEAM SO KNOW FIRST HAND THE TERRIBLE SUFFERING AND THE AGONY OF NOT FINDING ANY VETS OR RESCUE TO TAKE THESE DOGS -PUPPIES DYING IN THE GUTTER, NO VETERINARY SUPPLIES TO HAND - BUT HOPEFULLY SOS SRI LANKA WILL KNOW SHOW THE WORLD THAT KIM AND HER TEAM CAN CHANGE PEOPLES ATTITUTDE TOWARDS ANIMALS AND RID THE DREADED RABIES. WITH LIMITED FUNDS THEY HAVE BOUGHT A MICROSCOPE (NOT ONE IN THE SOUTH TO BE FOUND) THIS WILL SAVE MANY LIVES ALONG WITH THE VET DRUGS A MOBILE CLINIC IS MUCH NEEDED TO GO OUT TO THE VILLAGES SO THIS FANTASTIC GRANT WOULD MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE. I WON IFAW RESCUER OF THE YEAR IN 2006 AND RUN MY OWN RESCUE IN THIS COUNRTY BUT BEG THIS FANTASTIC LEGACY GOES TO ANIMAL SOS SRI LANKA THE NEED IS GREAT OVER THERE I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH SUFFERING BEFORE. My name is Scamp and I would like to nominate 'Animal SOS Sri Lanka'. I was put into a black bin liner with my brothers and sisters when I was only 2 weeks old and thrown onto a busy road in Sri Lanka. I was terrified. The bag was torn open by very fast cars and I lost my family. I managed to run but fell into a gutter. I was too small to get out so I slept there for 3 days with no food and water. I cried and cried but people just walked past me, some laughing but most just ignoring me, and with the heavy rains the gutter would fill up with sewage . Ants and rats were eating away at my skin as I had no hair. When I could not fight any more I closed my eyes . A noise woke me and I saw a man crouching over me in the gutter trying to pull me out but I bit him because I was so scared. I was too weak to fight and I fell asleep again in his hands. I woke up and saw the man again with other people and they were all looking at me and stroking me and trying to make me better . I was given a bath and all the food and milk my belly could manage. I thought I was in heaven and went to sleep again in the man’s hands with a blanket around me. When I woke up again I was still scared but knew I was safe. There were many other dogs who told me that they had similar stories and that they were saved by being brought to this rescue centre called 'Animal SOS' in the South of Sri Lanka. I am now so happy and I am sprouting ginger and black hair all over . I have a new mommy called Tulip who has three legs. I now have a home!

(This is a true story . I live in Sri Lanka and see suffering on a daily basis. Please support the efforts of Animal SOS Sri Lanka, a tiny charity desperate to save lives against all odds).

There is a wonderful charity called Animal SOS Sri Lanka. They have purchased land in the South of Sri Lanka, just outide Galle. This is to help the stray animals that just cannot cope on the streets of Sri Lanka. It will help with things like X Rays, and also have up to date equipment that are just not available in Sri Lanka. The dogs and cats currently have very little help in this country. This charity have helped implement a 'no kill' policy and are trying to stamp out the rabies problems there.
There are also education programmes to help show people animals are to be befriended not stoned or killed just because they live on the streets.
These animals desperately need our help. Please remember this is a very poor country that has very few facilities and aside from a few compounds in Negombo and the huge piece of land which will help many animals there is nothing there. There are no rescue sanctuaries aside from what Animal SOS Sri Lanka have set up. Please please help.

Animal SOS Sri Lanka is a team that is dedicated to the cause of looking after the massive population of stray dogs in Sri Lanka. Sadly, with a 30 year old problem of terrorism, Sri Lanka's population of stray dogs have increased to massive proportions and they are a neglected lot. About forty thousand people lost their lives in the Tsunami and another hundred thousand have died due to terrorist activities and their pets too are amongst this lot no doubt. For our good fortune Animals-SOS-Sri Lanka has undertaken to eradicate rabies from Sri Lanka and look after the stray dogs in a much more efficient way than it is already being done by a few societies already existing for the welfare of animals. This team has the heart, the will and the dedication to undertake this massive effort and all they lack is enough money to buy all the equipment and medicine plus all other extras necessary to treat these sick and hungry animals. Therefore, I strongly feel that Animal-SOS-Sri Lanka fully deserves to get this award. Thank you. Good luck to them!

Having come across the charity 'Animal SOS Sri Lanka' I can only describe their work as a wonderful achievement for all those who despise such common place animalsuffering/cruelty,especially it seems to dogs. In a country struggling with human deprivation, dogs/cats will always be treated in such a lowly way unless something is done to help turn the tide. Having seen first hand the terrible day to day lives these dogs live in this part of the world, I can only say their work is huge and that makes this charity a brave and truly admirable one.

I would like to nominate SOS Sri Lanka. I've seen pictures of the dogs out there, it's unbearable to see. The people who run this charity also help loads of dogs in this country, they are amazing people. The dogs out there have so many horrendous health problems and there are no vets to help out. If a dog is so ill that it has to be put down, which it would be in this country, it isn't there, the suffering is unbelievable. Please help this charity, dogs in this country at least have some sort of hope, but there they just don't. Dogs all over the world need help, but for this charity the money would help them rescue literally thousands of dogs from a life of pain and suffering.

In most Asian countries, specially in those that have been hit by war , refugees, poverty, tsunamis etc , animals are last on any welfare agenda. But these are the countries that have the most street animals and they need to be looked after. The animals in Sri Lanka need all the help they can get. If international money comes to the help of a Sri Lankan charity it serves two major purposes -

a. it builds a hospital/hospice/shelter quickly which otherwise will take years to get off the ground.

b.It brings respect to the charity and to the animals that it serves. In most Asian countries if a charity is recognized by a Western donation , it flourishes because the local people realize that their conduct is being watched by the world. So more volunteers join, more politicians get involved, the media do cheery stories and it has a profound impact on people getting gentler and more aware. Therefore the money works far more than its actual value.

That is why I believe that Animal SOS Sri Lanka-a UK Registered Charity 1119902 should be given money from England.

i would like to nominate a small charity based in the west midlands. it is DOGWATCHUK. it is run tirelessly by volunteers. they rescue death row dogs, they do not cherry pick the best ones which any charity knows are easy to home. in fact alot of the time they seem to be raising money just to keep staffs safe. bull breeds and large dogs must be the hardest to home at the moment because this charity constantly has them on the home wanted posters. the problem of being a small charity lies in fund raising, they do try to run a fund raising event every 6 to 8 weeks. the raised money goes on keeping dogs safe and healthy. i think this charity is in the same vein as the Doris Banner Rescue just on a smaller scale but no less worthy of your consideration.i really hope this is not a hoax.

If the rescue group is a registered charity then go to the CHARITY COMMISSION website. You can see each groups annual expenditure and income. Some of these small charities are spending more than they get in. They are not sitting on a pile of money. The Doris Banham Saanctuary which saves dogs on death row are an excellent group and there are no paid staff. Enter the charity number 1103372. The accounts only show up to 2007. Last year they almost closed because all the money had gone.

My other favourite is the Retreat number 1105654. This is particularly good with dealing with dogs with serious issues which would be pts.

I would have to say that the Greyhound Sanctuary in North Devon is such a deserving cause and I'd love to nominate them.

I believe receive no funding except the funds they raise working tirelessly to help poor ex-racing greyhounds. I have adopted two gorgeous greyhounds from them but they are such a small charity and would benefit hugely from a kind grant from yourselves.

They truly are all about the dogs and they really do care! They rely on the generosity of foster carers and volunteers to help introduce these often badly treated souls into the world and aim to find homes for all.

Please consider them.

Forest Dog Rescue has been in operation for almost 12 years now and all our volunteers have worked tirelessly for the 52 dogs approximately that are in care. We never put a dog down unless our Vet tells us there is no hope and it is kinder to put the doggie down.

The Council only give them 7 seven days of life before they put them down. This is why we have to take the dogs over, regardless of their condition and give them a second chance of life. They are helpless and cannot speak for themselves. Imagine what it would be like if we were in their place.

We are desparately in need of money to buy land and then build our own kennels, which would be so much cheaper for us nd be manned by our own volunteers. We have to pay £5.00. per day, per dog to several kennels in the area to keep these wonderful dgos alive.

We are trying to buy some land in order that we can build our own kennels and look after them ourselves. We fortunately were able to rent a shop last September and this has brought us in money and enabled us to get out of the 'red' and keep all the dogs in our care alive, but we ould be so grateful to receive a little of the money that is being offered for the so many needy dogs in our care. Please consider us as one of your 30 Most Deserving Dog Charities in Britain. We would not let you down. Wendy Squires.

I would like to nominate Border Collie Rescue from Yorkshire. They are a registered charity (No 1128983) and a voluntary organisation, so no wages to pay. They also have a seperate funding account, the Welfare Fund, where the funds donated are spent only on the direct needs of dogs in their care. 25K donated to that account would only be spent helping dogs in the future.
There are videos on their website showing the work they do and I am sure they would be willing to provide any information required.
I cannot praise them enough.
Please consider them as one of the 30 most deserving dog charities in Britian.

A small dedicated group of volunteer fundraisers work tirelessly to raise funds and support the centre in all ways. Fundraising is always a worry and with the recession now starting to show effects we need to redouble our efforts, so allhelp will be most gratefully appeciated.

Forest Dog Rescue is based in Worcestershire and takes on all the unclaimed strays & emergency cases in the Wyre Forest area and rehomes them. They have on average 40 - 50 dogs and have a non destruct policy. As they have no kennels of their own , fees of £5 per dog per day (approx £6000 per month) plus vets fees have to be raised. It is a marvellous charity giving all these dogs a second chance, which they all dererve. it only manages through extreemely hard work fundraising by the volunteers, but it is a constant struggle, well woth it if it saves over 200 dogs per year. Please consider them for the grant from this marvellous lady.Registered charity no 517173

Please give generous consideration to the UK funded but Sri Lankan based charity www.dogstarfoundation.com who do fantastic work for homeless dogs living on the streets, they have established free veterinary care, neutering and vaccinations for mainly stray dogs but also help local poor pet owners. They educate the children and work with Sri Lankan and foreign vets. Another very worthy cause is www.nowzaddogs.co.uk a charity set up by soldiers in Afghanistan who have saved many stray dogs and pups, even dogs used for sport fighting! They need desperate funds to support the ONLY dog rescue refuge in the entire country. These small groups get my vote because they are working against the odds in war torn or troubled parts of the world.

I work as an animal care assistant in Essex and follow the brilliant work of Samantha & Mark Green who started the Dog Star Foundation helping stray dogs in Sri Lanka. PLEASE consider giving them a donation. (Thank you!)
HERE ARE SOME DETAILS ABOUT THEIR LIFE SAVING & KIND WORK:
The Dogstar Foundation was founded in 2006 to provide free veterinary care to dogs and cats in the Kegalle area of Sri Lanka and has expanded to other areas via a series of mobile clinics and outreach projects offering free neutering and vaccinations
The animals that 'check in' to our clinics are not just pets, but also the local 'community' dogs (in the UK, we would call them strays). Un-neutered and unvaccinated companion animals (pets) and community animals interact daily and this creates an ideal environment for the spread of diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Ever-increasing population of dogs and cats overwhelm the resources of the local communities causing suffering and distress.

**929 animals sterilised since February 2007
By educating owners to the benefits of sterilisation and providing free neutering/spaying clinics The Dogstar Foundation is actively reducing the numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens. We also offer free vaccinations including ARV (Anti Rabies Vaccine) to all animals at our clinics to help prevent the spread of diseases to both the animal and human population.

People and animals are dying every year in Sri Lanka from bites, a scratch or even the saliva from an animal infected with Rabies, it is an entirely preventable death. The Dogstar Foundation has recently funded a study into levels of antibodies in community animals. The Dogstar Foundation is proud to support World Rabies Day 2009 as an outreach partner

We also provide other veterinary services for these animals free of charge, which is crucial. What would be considered a minor cut in the UK is a major problem in hotter climates, where infections can rage out of control very quickly. External skin parasites such as fleas and ticks are also treated as are skin condition such as mange.

We are always appealing for medicines, medical sundries, scrubs, bandages, medical equipment that will help us make a difference to the dogs and cats of Sri Lanka. Volunteer Vets and Nurses , Students and those with an interest in animal welfare are always welcome to join us.

The Dogstar Foundation works in conjunction with the Clinical Sciences Department of the University of Peradeniya where all Sri Lankan vets under go their training, we also work with existing Sri Lankan animal welfare organisations including the Millennium Elephant Foundation in Kegalle who have provided us with invaluable support and have been able to direct us to communities in need of our assistance.

The Dogstar Foundation also work with a small Temple in Randenyia , The Monk and his 2 young Samanera ( Novices ) care for a number of stray dogs and puppies that are left by people unable to care for them. Dogstar Foundation support them by making regular food donations, providing free veterinary care and have carried out 4 sterilisation clinics since 2007 to prevent the temple animals breeding further.

Since November 2007 the Dogstar Foundation has made a grants available to local Sri Lankan vets in the Kegalle area allowing them to offer subsidised and free treatments.

The Dogstar Foundation is working with the Millennium Elephant Foundation to provide a small animal service via MEF's mobile veterinary Unit allowing us to reach often overlooked rural communities.

since his death i wanted have my own Bulldog, then i came accross Bulldog Rescue, Tanya gave me that chance, with Bazil he wronged in the past and we became like brothers i loved that dog with all my heart some months later, Netti joined us she too was badly wronged with a lot of work and lots of love they both came part of our lives and the love was equal from them and us.
Sadly they both passed on it broke our hearts and i thought i could not love love another Bulldog.
I was wrong there wrong, Tania asked us to rescue and young Bulldog who called Billy after my dad.
And he fixed the hurt and pain of losing two dear Bulldogs.

BULLDOG RESCUE are completely deserving of one of these extremely kind & generous donations that are on offer. Bulldog Rescue is the only rescue for bulldogs in the whole of the UK, so as you can imagine, having to cover the whole of the UK for unwanted, sick & abandoned bulldogs is quite a job itself. Bulldog rescue have a fantastic team who dedicate not only their time to the rescue but also their lives. The couple that run bulldog rescue literally live and breathe rescue and I dont personally know of any one else who is so dedicated like they are.
Bulldog rescue do alot of funraising for the rescue, but this is not always enough. All the bulldog rescue team go through heart ache & cry many tears, they do a wonderfully fantastic job in helping to make the sick bulldogs better, and place the unwanted bulldogs in loving forever homes with families who can meet the bulldogs needs. Please consider this more then worthy charity. Bulldogs are amazing family pets, so loveable and comforting, these breed and charity really needs and deserves this money. It would be put to excellent use for the dogs. As bulldog rescue demonstrates, the dogs ALWAYS come first.

I first found Bulldog rescue when I suddenly lost my 10 year old bulldog.I rang and spoke to this lovely lady Tania who knew exactly how I was feeling. We spoke several times over the next week and as I did'nt live too far away Tania invited my son and I over so we could have a chat and a cuddle with her bulldogs.
The rescue is run from their home and both Tania and Diz are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week for any bulldog or their family in need.Tania is a minefield of information about this gorgeous breed and only to happy to share her knowledge.
When we went to visit a little bullie caught our eye all huddled up just staring at us with these big brown eyes she had been really neglected and had no fur but on the way home talking about her I contacted Tania and offered her a home with us,Bella came that evening and 6 weeks later had a lovely coat of new fur.We only had her a year but as Tania said it was probably the best year of her life.We went on to adopt another bullie Duke and he has made our lives complete again.
I became one of the many volunteers Tania has over the country so that I could give something back to the rescue. All her volunteers would at the drop of a hat go out and pick up a bulldog, foster it,do home checks drop them off to their new homes.they are a fantastic group of people who just care so much about this great breed.I love going up to visit to help muck in clean kennels walk the bullies or just have a cuddle with them.
Tania and Diz do such a fantastic job I could'nt think of a more worthwhile charity to recieve this donation,Thank you so much

Bulldog Rescue - I am not aware of such a small organisation having such a massive impact on a particular breed. Tania and her team (some are family) work long hours, to provide "forever homes" for our national breed, as well as educating people who come out with the endless comments about English Bulldogs being classed as dangerous. Always on call, day or night 365 days a year, they are truely worth consideration. On a personal level, without the team we would never have got our own dog, Jade, whose positive impact on our lives cannot be accountable. Again during the early period of ownership, regular checks, support, etc etc by the team make sure everything went to plan for us, and more importantly the dog. Thank you.

I know that a dedicated band of "Volunteers" go out day and night to rescue unwanted animals. Am amazing bunch of people dedicated to the welfare, physicaly and emotionaly of the Bulldog. I know that Volunteers have actually taken dogs on Holiday with them and some dogs have stayed with the Volunteer for months when a series of operations have had to be carried out. Dogs have even had specialist training to help them become socialised so they can be re homed. I know the aim is to re home every animal regardless of age. Bulldog Rescue has only ever had very modest funds and the Vet bills alone must cost a fortune. I think every Bulldog that has passed through Rescue would give a tail wag and a snuffle in their direction and say "I was lost and you found me, thank you so much, the cycle of abuse keeps on turning but I am found and I hope others will be as well"

Our paws go up high for The Dog Star Foundation because we've seen some photos that our mummy and daddy took when they came across the Dog Star group working with poor dogs in Sri Lanka. Please give some help to the wonderful Dog Star Foundation!

I would like to nominate Bulldog Rescue, as they are the only rescue for Bulldogs in the UK. They mainly get all funding from generous people donating to their charity, from events across the UK.

They have area volunteers in parts of the Uk to take in and look after bulldogs whether they have been abandoned, found or have been taken in to the nearest RSPCA for medication due to an illness.

I, myself , have just become a volunteer for the Humberside area. I have yet to look after a bulldog but I'm sure I will do soon.

Please, Please make Bulldog Rescue one of the most derserving dog charities as they will do anything to help a bulldog in need.

Thank you

I would like to cast a vote for The Dog Star Foundation who I met by chance recently whilst on a holiday tour of Sri Lanka with my family. From my observations of them I found their work outstanding and of a high standard. I work as a veterinary surgeon in England, one of my receptionists informed me of the nominations of animal causes on this forum. Are we allowed more than one vote? If so I would also pledge support to Doris Banham Dog Rescue www.dogsos.co.uk and the German Shepherd Rescue www.biggsd.com. Of course there are so many lovely little charities doing such wonderful work on a tight budget up an down the country, so I wish them all the best of luck.

I would like to nominate Labrador Rescue South East & Central. Recently they have rehomed a beautiful 8 year Labrador dog who was unfortunately involved in a nasty car accident and his owners were no longer able to cope with him. This charity paid a large substantial amount of money to have his leg operated on as it was severely broken but gave this dog a brand new lease of life in his new home.

I'd like to nominate a charity that is dear to my heart. The Tree of Life for Animals (TOLFA) - registered charity 1120789 - was set up in India by my very close friend Rachel Wright, a Veterinary Nurse who wanted to make a difference.

And she certainly has since starting TOLFA in 2005.

Just last year she treated over 11,500 dogs as well as neutering 6,700 dogs and vaccinating them against Rabies.

Imagine what she could do over the next few years with more funding. Already there's a dramatic reduction in the number of dog fights and maggot wounds (a direct result of the neutering programme) and there's also been a reduction in the number of rabies cases in both dogs and humans in the local area.

To get funding that would help her continue this amazing work would be fantastic.

Please help the UK registered charity 'TREE OF LIFE FOR ANIMALS'
(tolfa.org.uk) set up by a UK qualified veterinary nurse to help desperate animals in India. TOLFA is doing brilliant animal welfare work for strays and street dogs etc.
TOLFA really do deserve some financial assistance, please have a look at their website and see how they've blossomed from humble beginnings to provide essential healthcare, an animal clinic and refuge.

I would like to nominate TOLFA, Tree of Life for Animals for the amazing and inspiring job they do in India. http://tolfa.org.uk/

TOLFA, tree of life for aniamls, as i have seen first hand what they have achived so far e.g bringing down cases of rabies in the area, and saving many dogs lives that would have otherwise died a horrible death, and what else they can achive on very limited supplys.

I would like to nominate TOLFA (tree of life for animals). It is a British charity organisation based in India Rajasthan. They run a neutering and rabies vaccination program in all the near by villages, by doing this they have almost halved the number of deaths by rabies in the community and by keeping dog numbers down there are less strays. They are also educatiing local people on how to look after dogs and keep them as pets.

The job that TOLFA do is invaluable to the local community and for all the stray dogs who would otherwise suffer if they were not taken in for necessary treatments after road accidents and common dog illnesses like canine distemper and paralysis. The resources are TOLFA are limited and a donation the the centre would be very beneficial, and for all the hard work that is put into caring for the animals every day they are one of the most deserving dog charities.

I would like to nominate the UK Registered charity - Tree of Life for Animals (TOLFA). For the last 4 years, TOLFA has been literally saving the lives of feral and semi feral dogs that would otherwise be left on the streets of rajasthan to suffer a terrible end. Dogs that have been involved in a road accident, leaving them paralysed and dragging themselves around for weeks. Puppies that are suffering from infectious disease such as distemper and hepatitis which were eradicated in the west, decades ago. Dogs that have wounds infested with maggots that have eaten away to the bone. These are not exaggerated cases - these are everyday rescues that we receive into our hospital and make up the 100-150 canine inpatients that we are able to hospitalise at any one time. Despite horric conditions, more than 70% of the dogs recover and the others for maybe the first time in their lives , feel love and someone caring about them. to help improve the wellbeing of the more than 20000 strong stray canine population in our area, TOLFA over the last 3 years has vaccinated against rabies and sterilised more than 10,500 dogs. TOLFA is a young but yet determined tree spreading its branches to try andhelp every dog that is in need of its services. www.tolfa.org.uk

I'd like to nominate TOLFA, which is a british-based charity acting in Pushkar, India. In addition to providing much needed veterinary care to many animals in suffering, TOLFA also carries out an extensive neutering and rabies prophylaxis programme, which not only improves the health and welfare of dogs, but also reduces the risk of rabies in humans. This charity saves lives.

I would like to nominate Tree of Life for Animals located in Kharekari, India. I had a chance to spend a month there and I have to say the difference that this charity is making is wonderful. In two years they have been able to spay and neuter almost 80% of the stray dogs in the area. No easy feat considering this is a previously untouched population of street dogs; so you can imagine their numbers! Please consider Tree of Life for doing work in a place that needs it most.

Alison Cruthers said: I would like to nominate Tree of Life for Animals, Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. This is a charity involved in the world wide spay programme which has reduced the incidence of rabies in the human population, by reducing the number of street dogs. It has also resulted in stopping the mass inhumane killing of street dogs by the local authorities. In doing so, it has meant the remaining dogs have an improved quality of life, without the burden of constant litters.

I would like to support the nomination for the Tree of Life for Animals (TOLFA) in India. I recently had the pleasure of spending one month at this charity. While I was there, an annual festival called Urs was going on in a nearby city. Before TOLFA came into existence, all of the stray dogs in the area would be tied up to posts and left there without food, water, or shelter. TOLFA was able to recieve permission from the authorities to round up the stray dogs in the area and keep them at the shelter until the festival is over, then release them back to their original location. They also spay/neuter and give rabies vaccinations to any dogs not already done during this time. This is just one small example of the work TOLFA does on a daily basis in an area where the animals are so badly in need to veterinary care and kindness.

I know I'm commenting again but I just need to say PLEASE, look through the TOLFA website! See under the section: 'Rescue & Care' - It's absolutely astounding the quality of care and high standards of veterinary treatments and procedures 'TREE OF LIFE FOR ANIMALS' are providing for all sorts of animals but MANY dogs... the little 'slum dogs of India' (how sweet)
I haven't had the honour to volunteer for them yet, but know a vet who has already. Fellow vet nurse Rachel Wright has set up a remarkable animal charity and is doing outstanding work with her team to help the 'slum dogs of India' PLEASE assit TOLFA! :o)

They only rescue bulldogs, the greatest breed on the planet, and the dog most synonymous with Britain.
They are a wonderful charity, run by a dedicated couple and a network of volunteers. I have had 4 dogs from them now and they have been the most wonderful companions.
Thanks Bulldog rescue..

I would like to nominate The Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue from Lincolnshire
www.yorkie-rescue.friendhood.net
This is a small rescue and has several foster homes. Even though I live in the North East of England these people managed to get a little Bichon to me as I dont drive..you just need to go on this website to see what a friendly rescue this is and what a great follow up after adopting the dog also. The work that is done by Sue and her helpers is second to none and they could really do with part of your grant for there great work they do at there rescue.

I would like to nominate Fife Rottweiler Rescue. They are now a registered charity (Scottish Registered Charity No. SC040729) They are a small rescue, run by volunteers, that would be able to help soooo much more rotties with this kind of donation. Might even go to help getting their own kennels. Most of their money goes on kennel fees and vet fees. All dogs are fully assessed, microchipped, vaccinated and neutered (if old enough) before going to their new homes.

I would like to nominate the Fife Rottweiler rescue because of all the work they do to protect the name of these kind and gentle dogs.
I was one of the many people who thought they were big ferocious dogs. After looking after two different dogs for family members, i came to see just how kind and loving these dogs were. After loosing them i though long and hard about having another dog. Then Frr was recommended to me. I phoned but not accepted right away because they will not give a dog to just anyone. Although they have very little funds, they must know the dogs they re home will be looked after for life. They ensure the dogs have all their jabs. wormed and spayed/neutered. These costs are met by them with car boot sales raffles etc. They are asked by many other rescue centers to take dogs which are about to be put to sleep. This they do to try and save the lives of these dogs. I hope you find you can spare some of these funds to support this deserving charity.
