Cavaliers - Knights in shining armour?
I just had a phone call from a Cavalier breeder that made me remember that there are some Cavalier breeders doing a really great job. With the terrible PR generated by the club expelling a wonderful woman like Margaret Carter, it's easy to forget that there are still some Cavalier breeders doing their very best for the breed despite it all.
Check out this website.
The Knights have all the MRI scans up on their website so that everyone can see them. And they are really are trying the very best on hearts, too. For two years running their breeding has been top of the charts for heart results. Who cares about CCs - that's the kind of record I'd really aspire to!
They've just lost one of their dogs at 15 1/2 years old - and he has two offspring who are 14 years old.
I've been looking at the photos on their website and they are gorgeous looking dogs, too.
So while yesterday was a very dark day, that call brightened things up considerably. You can have it all... perhaps? Just need breeders like the Knights to become the majority.

Were you moved by Pedigree Dogs Exposed?
(the distressing documentary about the health of dogs shown on BBC1 in August?)
Here's the petition wording:
Following the powerful Pedigree Dogs Exposed documentary on
BBC1 the Kennel Club still seems reluctant to grasp the nettle,
face the problems and reform itself. The program revealed it
urgently needs to bring in mandatory minimum standards on
levels of inbreeding, make health testing mandatory, prevent
unhealthy physical exaggerations being rewarded and stop the
culling of healthy non-standard pups by changing breed
standards. The KC continually complains that it lacks the
backing of legislation to bring in these urgent and much needed
reforms, so we the undersigned urge the Prime Minister please
instigate legislation to ensure pedigree dogs are saved from
unnecessary future suffering.

You may have heard that the RSPCA and Dogs Trust have since pulled out of Crufts in an attempt to encourage the Kennel Club to reform. If you would like to send a clear message to both the Kennel Club and to Government that change is urgently needed to stop future dogs from suffering then please sign this e-petition on the official 10 Downing Street site. The latest letters sent out from DEFRA suggest they haven't yet heard from enough of the general public to make this issue significant. Please do all you can to change their perspective!

"Re: Constituency letters of pedigree dog breeding
Following the BBC documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed, you may have received letters from constituents concerned about pedigree dog breeding, showing an/or registration.
Since healthy dogs are a priority for the Kennel Club, we are pleased that the programme brought the issue of breed health to the forefront. However, concerns are understandable since the programme did not clarify to viewers the work of the Kennel Club in improving the health of pedigree dogs in the past, present and future.
Given this, I thought it might be helpful to enclose a breifing that outlines the work of the Kennel Club in this important area, which you are welcome to send on to constituents.
Should you wish to meet to discuss this further, or if you have any questions, please do let me know."
Enclosed was a 2 page document entitled 'Briefing Note: Breed Health'.
Interestingly, while I tried to read the Briefing Note my year old Staffy (not KC registered) tried to eat it. As she has to have an operation later this week for luxating patella I wonder if she was trying to tell me something.
I am pleased if the KC are moving in the right direction, but can't help thinking that they are a bit cheeky claiming that they were on the ball all the time!
Oh well, a result, never the less.
No seriously...you can but hope!
